Us Editor (Uk)
Current
Creator And Host Of Reverberate
CurrentI am also the creator and presenter of the new feature Guardian podcast series Reverberate – recently nominated for the International Music Journalism Award for Best Work of Audio Journalism (!) – in which I explore incredible stories from around the world about when music shook history. Each episode focuses on a turning point in a city’s story, as told through a song that sparked a moment – and reveals the deeper social and political issues that shaped these pivotal events
Ocean Editor
Current
Commissioning Editor And Special Series, International Desk
I am currently a commissioning editor specialising in international news and special series. I primarily split my time between the Foreign desk, as G1 International editor, and as Oceans editor, working between the Environment and Foundations teams. Some of the special projects I've overseen and managed include The End of the Arctic, for Guardian US; the 2020 special focus on how cities are changing; and an expansion of Guardian opinion and feature reporting in Canada.
Editor, Guardian Cities
I ran the Guardian's award-winning Cities desk, first as founding deputy editor in 2014 then as Editor from 2016. I directed and managed a full-time staff of 8 commissioning, production and picture editors, audio and film producers, as well as administrative and casual employees and a network of staff and freelance correspondents around the world to originate, shape and produce digital-first news, features, analysis, photography, video and podcasts about cities as part of the Guardian's global 24-hour rolling domestic and foreign coverage. The project was regularly awarded top journalism prizes: for example, in our final year we won the British Journalism Award in the Features category (for our series The Empty Doorway by Simon Hattenstone and Danny Lavelle on homeless deaths), the Foreign Press Association Award for best science or environment story (for Guardian Concrete Week) and were nominated for Campaign of the Year for our work exposing segregated playgrounds, which I reported alongside Harriet Grant. I was also nominated for the Orwell Prize.
Features Journalist (Culture, Environment, Technology, Media Etc)
I joined the Guardian in London from Tokyo as an editor and features writer, producing news, reviews, analysis and long-form journalism primarily for the Culture desk with a speciality in global film, including regular correspondence from festivals, as well interviews and original commentary. I also wrote pieces for Media, Environment, Books, Architecture, Technology and Music, and edited the G1 Reviews section.
Desk Editor, International Division
I wrote, commissioned and edited news and features for the English-language international division of the International Herald Tribune, now known as the International New York Times, in its partnership with the biggest progressive newspaper in Japan, the Asahi Shimbun. Working alongside Japanese-language reporters, I edited domestic news for the daily print edition and developed longer-form features for the weekend and special supplements. I left to join the Guardian in London.
Co-Founder And Editorial Director
Along with the LA-based artist Alex DeJong I edited and published a lifestyle and culture publication for a young, progressive readership across Canada and the United States, attracting top literary and artistic talent and building it to a quarterly circulation of 20,000 with an advertiser base including Nike, American Apparel and Sony Music. After four years, I left to take up a position in Tokyo with the International New York Times.
General Assignment Reporter And Media Critic
My first job in journalism involved writing news, features and cultural commentary for the national Canadian newspaper the National Post, where among other stories I broke the Circus Ethiopia sexual abuse scandal, which led page one for a week, and wrote a regular series of features for the weekly Media page.
