During my senior year at Beverly High School, 25 others including myself, participated in an internship with the Beverly Police Department. From April 2019 to May 2019, I worked closely with officers involved in the program learning a variety of different aspects of the criminal justice system. The program had guest speakers from agencies like the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), The Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC), and Massachusetts Task Force 1 (MA-TF1). We experienced some interactions officers may have when conducting their job, mainly through hypothetical scenarios such as a traffic stop or searching a building for a suspect. The officers also taught us certain police procedures and laws regarding search and seizure, use of force, counsel, community policing, de-escalation, and more. Towards the end of the internship, I worked in a group to present at the internship fair at Beverly High School to demonstrate what we have learned from the experience. For our final project, we focused on the use of force and I learned a lot about police techniques, laws protecting themselves, and citizens. My job was focusing on lethal and non-lethal force, organizing the poster, and presenting my part to anyone that came up to our table wanting to learn about our topic. It was a great experience that I could look back on and reflect on positively knowing it would help me prepare for my future career.
