Producing a live television show is very challenging. Every morning, Battleground’s team of producers would meet to identify and analyze the big political stories from Canada and the United States. Once the show’s line-up of topics and guests was finalized, the countdown to live began. We would spend the day pouring over visual elements, writing snappy scripts, and producing segments in a creative way. Watching your hard work come together at 5 p.m. was very gratifying. Establishing and maintaining professional relationships with political strategists, journalists, and public officials was one of my principal responsibilities. The most rewarding part was working with David Akin and a team of talented producers.

Tip O’Neil, former U.S. Speaker of the House, once said, “All politics is local.” I quickly learned why the phrase rings true. As a grassroots political advisor. I worked with team members to develop and implement campaign strategies. Identifying, monitoring, and providing strategic advice to the candidate on critical issues were some of my key responsibilities. I also organized local fundraising and outreach events, and developed key relationships with business leaders, community activists, donors and long-time supporters.

I cut my teeth on Parliament Hill. It was the most challenging work experience of my career. My primary responsibilities included: overseeing efficient office operations; managing special projects; and maintaining key relationships with stakeholders. I was also tasked with preparing my MP for committee, debates, and meetings. Consequently, I developed prudent political judgment, and gained a detailed knowledge of policy development, decision-making, and legislative processes.

My experience as a teaching assistant was very rewarding. I was responsible for inspiring young people to become more aware of the political forces at play in today's society. Students actively participated in class debates on topics ranging from international aid to the role of the supreme court.
