About Christopher N. Lyles, Ph.D.

My research revolves around how microorganisms interact with their environment. Of particular interest is the degradation of recalcitrant compounds such as coal and hydrocarbons as well as organic pollutants. Usually, a complex community of microorganisms is required for complete oxidation of these compounds. My goal is to understand the interactions within the microbial community and how they function together to accomplish complete mineralization. Thus, my efforts include identifying the requisite microflora for complete mineralization, establishing the prevalent metabolic pathway, and quantitatively assessing the rates of biodegradation.
