My time spent studying molecular biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign introduced me to fundamental laboratory skills such as polymerase chain reaction ("PCR") and gel electrophoresis. Additional laboratory practices for biohazard safety level 2 ("BSL2") environments and proper personal protective equipment were taught to me as well. Following graduation I decided to spend a year serving in AmeriCorps. The program, City Year Chicago, let me serve students at underserved schools throughout the city of Chicago. This position was particularly gratifying for me as I stand by the position that education is an experience all people can access in an equitable nature. My financial position changed during my service year, City Year connected me with the VP of Treasury Management for First Midwest Bank. I was given the opportunity to explore a career in financial services, both for my development and to accommodate the change in my financial landscape. Working as a banker my communication and collaborative skills were heavily utilized to optimize the experience of my clients. When First Midwest Bank merged with Old National Bank I took that as an opportunity to realign my professional development with the biological and health sciences which I had come to sorely miss. I had the opportunity to work at the biotechnology company, Tempus, as a clinical laboratory associate. Tempus exposed me to working within a Laboratory Information Management Systems ("LIMS") as well as accessioning and reviewing incoming clinical samples. Unfortunately I could not continue working in that position as a serious health concern developed that needed to be addressed. Fortunately that concern has been resolved and I'm eager to continue working in my field.
