Profile bio

About Christopher Obryan

Website: https://www.seas.upenn.edu/~csobryan/My name is Dr. Christopher S. O'Bryan. I received my Ph.D in mechanical engineering from the University of Florida in 2019 for my work in developing new microgel systems and applying them as sacrificial support materials for soft matter 3D-printing and bioprinting applications. My research interests lie in using this 3D printing technique to understand the mechanical instabilities that arise in biological and soft matter systems in a controlled 3D environment. As part of this research, I would routinely perform fluorescence imaging of tissue and cell samples using a combination of brightfield, epifluorescence, and confocal microscopy and perform the corresponding quantitative image analysis. As such, I have extensive experience in developing customized algorithms and data analysis scripts using both MATLAB and FIJI ImageJ software. The complexity of these analysis ranged from cell segmentation and individual cell counting as part of live-dead assays and cell tracking, to determining spatial-temporal relationships using auto- and cross-correlation functions and applying the appropriate mechanical models to understand the biophysics of the 3D-printed cellular structures. During my time at the University of Florida, I served as a mentor to fellow students through programs such as the Student Science Training Program (SSTP) and Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), to provide laboratory experience to undergraduate and high school students during the summer months. In 2017, I received the Student Research Award from the University of Florida for my work in developing organic based microgels to overcome the destabilizing interfacial instabilities encountered when printing organic based inks and enable the 3D-printing of silicone structures in their fluid state.I am currently working as a postdoctoral research assistant at the University of Pennsylvania in the labs of Dr. Daeyeon Lee and Dr. Russell Composto. My current research if focused on studying the adsorption behavior of polymers onto solid metal interfaces. During my time at the University of Pennsylvania, I have continued to reach out to the community and mentor future scientist by volunteering during the annual Penn Nanoday, leading a coding workshop focused on basic image analysis techniques for graduate students during the COVID lockdown, and teaching a virtual lab with local high school students focused on the basics of surface tension and capillarity.
