Prof. Christopher P. Buttigieg is a seasoned financial regulator and supervisor with over 24 years of experience in the field. An accountant by profession, Prof. Buttigieg has developed profound expertise in public policy, banking and securities regulation, and Fintech.Since joining the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) in 2000, Prof. Buttigieg has held several senior leadership roles for more than 16 years. He currently serves as the MFSA’s Chief Officer Supervision and was the Authority's Chief Executive Officer Ad Interim from October 2020 to September 2021. Prof. Buttigieg actively contributes to European financial regulatory bodies as a member of the Board of Supervisors of both the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) and the European Banking Authority (EBA). He also chairs the ESMA Proportionality and Coordination Committee.Academically, Prof. Buttigieg holds a PhD in Law Studies, specialising in financial regulation and supervision, from the University of Sussex (UK). He has published over 30 papers in academic journals, focusing on financial regulation and the institutional framework for financial supervision.In addition to his regulatory work, Prof. Buttigieg is an Associate Professor in the Banking and Finance Department at the University of Malta. He also serves as a visiting lecturer and is a member of the Board of Trustees at the Academy of European Law (Trier, Germany).
