Conducted functional research on clinical prostate cancer samples to develop novel biomarkers and clinical cancer detection assays. Managed U.S. Army Prostate Cancer Sequencing Center, including in-house and external requests for DNA instrumentation, experimentation, data analysis and organization. Developed custom databases for data management and custom software tools for analyzing DNA sequence data and microarray gene expression data.

Wrote and received grant awards from the National Science Foundation and Howard Hughes Medical Institute for undergraduate research fellowship. Conducted independent basic research to resolve arthropod evolutionary relationships using molecular genetics data. Achieved understanding of advanced research theory by supplementing undergraduate coursework with graduate seminars.
