I am a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant Upper GI surgeon in London with a specialist interest in oesophageal and gastric cancer. My academic interest is molecular and clinical predictors of outcome in Oesophageal adenocarcinoma, which was the topic of my PhD carried out in the Hutchison-MRC research centre, Cambridge, under the supervision of Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald and Mr Richard Hardwick. I am now attempting to develop clinically relevant ways of stratifying patients with this disease, thereby improving our management strategies. I was a co founder of the OCCAMS collaboration which is currently whole genome sequencing 500 oesophageal adenocarcinomas as part of the CRUK funded ICGC project. This is a large multi centre collaborative project with teams working together to better understand the underlying cause of this disease, plus perhaps developing better ways to predict outcome and achieve better survival rates.I am a medical advisor for BBCs Eastenders, Death in Paradise and the new spin off Beyond Paradise. and have worked with Lovely Day Productions (part of Kudos) on new programme development. I was the Medical Advisor for TRAUMA, by Mike Bartlett (creator of Doctor Foster), as well as the cop drama Dark Heart. I worked with Hera Pictures on both series of Sky's Temple series with Mark Strong. From a business development point of view I have carried out consultancy work advising companies about potential investment opportunities as well as helping them to think about their own product development. Some of this was via management consultancy firms and other times it was for medical device companies directly. The scope of this consultancy has ranged from scientific lab equipment through to medical devices and information management systems.
