My shift back to data engineering represents an ongoing theme at Garner where I have been used as a 'fixer' across different engineering areas, being backfilled and asked to transition to a new problem once the prior problem is stabilized. In data engineering I first identified that Garner was an excellent candidate for a Data Mesh approach, defined the organizational structures and basic processes to support that and began hiring engineers, starting with a Data Platform team. As I was building out the technical side I also evangelized the idea that a robust data governance program, serving the executive function, is critical to our organization goals and was successful in getting that program spun up, with initial directions shaped by my advice. With Data platform beginning to function and a nascent governance program I built out small teams of data engineers to support our directory and rankings teams, with engineers on all 3 teams (data platform, rankings, directory) reporting to me.

After stabilizing the claims and eligibility systems I was promoted to VP where I set the stage for future success of those teams. At this point I engaged heavily with my product partner to redefine how we planned and scoped large, long term initiatives since that was a significant pain point for the organization. Using the new paradigm we mapped out the next year of development for that business vertical. By this point this organization was no longer the biggest pain point in the organization. I was asked to transition back to data engineering after backfilling myself to address what was now a significant problem for us.

After starting the back end engineering function at Garner I successfully recruited the people who remain core to the team nearly three years later, whom we have built around. I shifted us to building back end systems in Python, led our decision making on our core technology stack, and took over the implementation of our claims and eligibility systems. Those systems were major risks to the success of our business and through a combination of raising the technical bar, pushing a new approach to quality and testing, and building a relationship between our analytics and engineering organizations I was able to stabilize those systems while building a foundation for future growth.

I was originally hired at Garner to build a data engineering organization. I began the work of doing so, putting in place some core pieces of the technology stack and implementing pipeline components that we still use today. That being said, after starting I quickly realized that the core problems we needed solutions for were not data engineering and I successfully influenced my management to refocus on back end engineering. I was tapped to lead that effort.
