This was a continuation of my role with Merrill Lynch in Tokyo. I worked remotely with the Tokyo team, as well as developers in Tokyo and Hong Kong. Most of my projects during this period involved the same suite of applications that I worked with in Tokyo. My major contributions include:• Added a mechanism to validate long sell orders against positions in our position keeping system• Enhanced the code (originally designed for use in Japan) to support multiple countries. Our trading system was subsequently released in Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong.• Improved the socket-based interprocess communication protocol to improve throughput on high-latency networks• Added support for mass quotes on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s TDEX+ system• Added support for multi-leg instruments• Added support for Oracle databases• Added support for new market data feeds (e.g. ASX and SFE)• Trained new developers• Added a unit testing framework based on UnitTest++• Key developer on a new trading front end for managing and trading merged portfolios

Developed a server-side application to enable a vendor-supplied trading system called Orc to trade on the Japanese markets. This connected Orc to Merrill Lynch’s databases, market data feeds, and exchange gateway. It also routed trades from Orc to other systems for ticketing purposes. This program was written in C++ on Solaris, using an API provided by the vendor to communicate with Orc. It ran successfully for 10 years until Orc was decommissioned.Key member of the team that developed and supported a large integrated suite of C++ libraries and applications known as SEDI. This system used a modular design, with most of the code residing in shared libraries. The libraries used a sophisticated object-oriented framework to provide services such as object management, interprocess communication, database access, real time market data, instrument and account lookup, order management, and user interfaces. This design enabled new applications to be developed relatively quickly, since only application-specific code needed to be written.SEDI included dozens of programs for basket trading, middle office, position keeping, reporting, and interfacing with other systems. It was originally developed on Solaris, but was later ported to Linux and Microsoft Windows.My major contributions to SEDI include: • Optimized and enhanced position keeping system • Added support for futures, options, and convertible bonds • Added multi-currency support • Added mechanisms to distribute real time market data to multiple applications from a single subscriber, using sockets or memory-mapped files • Optimized and enhanced UI code • Added support for Excel-style formulas to our UI tables • Developed applications to automatically allocate trades using instructions received from the client in text files or via the FIX protocol • Designed and coded a new high performance allocation algorithm. • Enhanced our database access layer

Enhanced, debugged, and supported a proprietary equity trading system called BETS (Barings Exchange Trading System), which had been developed before I arrived. It consisted of six separate executables running on SunOS, written in C++ using a complex object-oriented design. The Teknekron Information Bus (TIB) was used to transfer information between the different modules, and to subscribe to a TSE price feed. The UI was written using the Motif and X-Windows APIs.Added several new features, including an intra-day position keeping screen and an auditing system. Also made a number of smaller modifications, and fixed a number of long standing bugs. This was achieved in an environment of minimal support as the original developers had resigned shortly after development was completed, and there was little documentation.Developed a trading front end called PTA (Pair Trading Application). In 1998, BETS was replaced with a vendor System called FOX, from Fusion Systems Japan. PTA replaced one of the BETS trading modules, which implemented a proprietary pair trading strategy. PTA was developed in Visual Basic 5.0 under Windows NT 4.0. It used a vendor API to connect to the FOX server, ODBC to connect to the FOX database, and the Tiblink API to subscribe to a TSE 64K price feed.Developed a program to transfer orders and trades between FOX and a system called BORIS. This was written in C++ on Solaris.
