Self employed producing concept designs for a military vehicle family. Approach focused on rapid design of role specific vehicles and on minimum support burden in service.

Lead engineer for two consecutive military vehicle concept prototypes with responsibility for coherent system design covering automotive, protection, payload capability, mobility, maintainability. System engineer on deployable air picture system for UK MOD. Led ASW and mine countermeasures concept studies and initial system design for Royal Navy’s Merlin Mk2 ASW capability. Technical solution architect for an integrated reconnaissance and surveillance system in support of a UAV proposal to UK MOD. Technical lead for Mission Planning device for Royal Navy’s anti-submarine helicopter. System engineer for communications system, ESM system for Royal Navy’s anti-submarine helicopter. In each case responsible for ensuring the integrated design met the system requirements.

Held position of Head of Electrical Design. Responsible for all aspects of vehicle electrical systems including specification of components and sub-systems. Manager of the Electrical Section within the Drawing Office, ensuring control of the design of all military vehicle electrical circuits and installation design of all electrical components. Head of Future Technology Group with responsibility for investigating and assessing all new technologies’ usefulness to future vehicles. Held positions in both vetronics and integration study teams in a joint venture with Royal Ordnance and British Aerospace competing for the future British Army reconnaissance vehicle, TRACER. Completed the design and installation of the electrical system of a mine-laying vehicle that was taken from concept to delivery in 14 weeks for the British Army in the first Gulf War.

Responsible for the design and validation of flight simulator application software. Analysis performed of aircraft manufacturers’ data to define performance. Definition of simulator computer I/O. Test guides for customer acceptance pass-off tests written. Creation of programs to accurately simulate aircraft system behaviour. Basic hardware tests of simulator performed, followed by hardware/software integration. Simulator performance verification against pass-off criteria. On-site installation performed and acceptance testing with the customer’s acceptance crews.

Responsible for electronic hardware design of military battery chargers involving digital, analogue and discrete circuits, often intermixed. Programming of RCA1802 microprocessors in machine code and assembler. Design and build of test jigs to support production of above designs. Generation of reports and test specifications.
