Principal Packaging Engineer

Bridgewater, Nj, Us

Initiated an unconstrained package system redesign; bottle, closure, carton, lens case, and labeling to enhance functionality and consumer appeal. Design will be adaptable for multiple eye category products (e.g. eye drops, RX, OTC, multiple purpose drops, and contact lenses) and fits brand equity. Developed budget for design consulting fees, market research, capital, plant change parts, and tooling costs. Completed several phases of development including brand immersion, competitive and category analysis, comparative products and process, and concept development. Refined selection of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round, of packaging concepts, using a Pugh analysis, team selected lead concepts and performed qualitative research to attain the voice of the customer.Created a new and improved, user friendly design, to an existing dispensing pump package system; the redesign focuses on making only external design changes so as not to affect the current validated preservative free eye drop system. This patent pending design eliminates having to repeat the complicated, costly, and time consuming sterile qualification process of a new packaging system.

Package Engineer

Danbury, Ct, Us

Design, specify, document, and qualify packaging materials to enhance stability, efficiency and cost containment.Led Project Team to create new package to triple room temperature stability of product. Initiated Packaging studies that determined the best environment to preserve critical attributes of a dry powder inhaled drug product. These studies resulted in a significantly more stable product at various temperatures. Once optimum conditions were established, steered commercial packaging committee to a novel new package. The package saves half of the raw materials typically required with conventional packaging solutions, runs ten times the speed and costs a third of other packaging solutions. Purchased form, fill, and seal, stickpack and flow wrap packaging equipment to package inhaler device, primary and secondary drug packaging.Developed new inhaler packaging through Solid Works modeling and prototype tooling. The Clamshell is easily opened by people with limited dexterity and utilizes a wide flange with offset file tab design. The new package allows Inhaler labeling serialization to be read through package allowing verification of package contents without opening. Previously reconciling inhalers at clinical sites was cumbersome, with the non-transparent box, because opaque boxes needed to be opened and inspected for each of the contents. Matching serial numbers on inhalers to serial numbers on labels non-sequentially was labor intensive. The Clamshell can be used to transport inhalers and components back to company for proper handling, reconciliation, and disposal. Modular cavities are designed to be flexible so contents can change without having to change clamshell tooling. Package also contains CD/DVD holder that can double as patient starter kit once product goes commercial.
