Profile bio

About Christopher Schiff

I am a Master of Engineering (M.Eng. 2024) student in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell. I am most interested specifically in RTL/microarchitectural level digital design for hardware accelerators, but have experience with many different areas including digital signal processing, systems-level programming, microcontroller and system-on-chip design, high-level design automation (EDA), machine learning, and various others.Outside of Cornell, I have worked as an intern in different roles with the BrainGate program (an inter-institutional research collaborative) on their human brain-computer interface aimed at restoring the communication, mobility, and independence of people with neurologic disease, injury, or limb loss. I have a deep specific interest in BCIs, neuroprosthetics, and other restorative neurotechnology, but remain open to interest in other fields and applications of digital hardware with significant real-world impact.

Digital Design And Verification Project Lead

  • Founding member of a first-of-its-kind undergraduate ASIC project team focusing on open-source design and social impact.
  • Led a project to research, develop, and integrate open-source high-level synthesis tools for digital ASIC design.
  • Collaboratively architected the fixed-point FFT accelerator module for team’s inaugural ASIC on the SKY130 node.
Sep 2022 - Sep 2023

Hardware Engineering Intern

Braingate, Brown University
  • Planned the FPGA design of the neural signal processing for the BrainGate human intracortical brain-computer interface.
  • Designed hardware description block diagrams for implementing a neural signal processing Simulink/MATLAB model as a dataflow pipeline in the programmable logic (integrated FPGA) of a Xilinx Zynq-7000 system-on-chip.
  • Developed, documented, and justified a design flow for moving the neural signal processing pipeline from a Simulink/MATLAB model into an RTL/Verilog implementation for the Zynq-7000 using Vitis HLS and Vivado.
  • Implemented digital signal processing IP using C++ in Vitis HLS and Verilog in Vivado to be used as reference material.
Jul 2022 - Aug 2022

Research Engineering Intern

Braingate, Brown University
  • Carried out independent research and gained a thorough understanding of modern spike sorting techniques including methodologies, purpose/applications, and the history and future of the technology.
  • Applied this knowledge to sort spike data from large array human neural recordings from the use of the BrainGate interface in tandem with a soft robotic glove.
  • Conducted automatic and manual spike sorting using proprietary MATLAB code and the Plexon offline sorter.
Jul 2021 - Aug 2021

Software Engineering Intern

Braingate, Brown University
  • Developed calibration software for high-performance human intracranial brain-computer interface control of a computercursor (movement and selection).
  • Created a web-based software solution that could easily be accessed by a participant in their home/with their own computer.
  • Self-taught JavaScript, HTML and CSS to create a JavaScript application that interfaced with the BCI system (runningMATLAB/Simulink) via a Python HTTPS server using WebSocket.
  • Completed project ahead of schedule (project was not expected to be completed during the internship but was finished withtime left) while meeting or exceeding all required performance metrics.
