Dr. Schilling is a semi-retired engineering professor, with over 20 years of experience writing research grants at two US Dept. of Energy labs and two state universities. Many of his grants focused on teaching engineers how to move prototypes to commercialization, particularly those pertaining to materials science, nondestructive evaluation and renewable energy. He currently works part time as an Adjunct Professor of Engineering Technology at Polk State College in Florida. He and his wife are Registered Florida Professional Guardians. He started in the 1970s as a machinist. After earning a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering at Cal Poly, he earned an M.Sc. in Materials Science from UCLA. He then worked at N.A.S.A. Jet Propulsion Laboratory on laboratory research concerning solidification in the microgravity environment of a drop tower. He later worked for Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory of the US Dept of Energy while earning his Ph.D. at the University of Washington in Seattle. He later held a joint position as Associate Professor of Materials Science at Iowa State University; and Research Engineer at the U.S. Dept of Energy Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University; while working on two areas of research: (1) biopolymers for colloidal ceramic processing; and (2) biodegradable plastics. In 2001, he relocated to Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan to work in an academic environment that is focused less on basic science research and more on industry-targeted research. There he was awarded grants from the US Department of Agriculture, the US Department of Energy, and several leading agri-business agencies in Michigan to prototype technology that converts various biomass materials into biodegradable plastics and combustible biofuels. Specialties: Renewable energy, materials science, nondestructive evaluation, mechanical testing, technology commercialization, engineering proposal writing, regional economic diversification.
