In response to the need for large scale COVID-19 testing in the UK Circular1 Health was founded to provide high throughput laboratory testing services in the private sector. Update April 2021: Achieved successful exit to become part of a larger group focussing on therapeutics and diagnostics in the Alzheimer's field - exploiting CynapseDx' expertise in blood oligomeric protein biomarkers and continuing development of the company's novel therapeutic apheresis treatment for neurodegenerative diseases.(The new name for CellCap Technologies Ltd). Advanced immunoassay technology is being employed to detect and quantity brain-derived oligomeric and aggregated protein biomarkers in the blood. These include beta amyloid and alpha synuclein. The company's focus is on the diagnosis (and misdiagnosis) of Parkinson's Disease and other Lewy Body disorders, such as Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) and Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). Recently oligomeric forms of these biomarkers have been detected in the blood of Alzheimer's Disease patients. Collaborators include the University of Liverpool, Lancaster University, Newcastle University and Microsens Biotechnologies.The North West Fund for Biomedical provided additional seed funding in August 2015.

Returned to the CEO role at Microsens in 2019 to lead the fund raising programme for our TB and sepsis products. Somewhat overtaken by events in March 2020; the patient-side TB test was reconfigured as a SARS-CoV-2 molecular test in less than a week by our co-founder and CSO Dr Stuart Wilson. This assay is based on our proprietary RapiPREP RNA sample preparation technology in combination with our adaptation of the LAMP nucleic acid amplification method. Clinical trials commenced on Friday 20th March using samples from a Guys' and St Thomas' care home (hand delivered by medical staff to our labs. at the London Bioscience Innovation Centre), as always a few revisions were needed with real samples, the MicrosensDx assay was performing satisfactorily by Sunday 22nd and compared favourably with the Guy's in house PCR method, scientific paper on the new assay written March 28/29, submitted Tuesday 31st March. Professor Toby Mottram founded Milkalyser to commercialise an automated progesterone analysis system to revolutionise dairy cow fertility management. Milkalyser has recently received investment from the Mercia Fund in the UK. Having developed one of the first on-farm manual, microplate-based progesterone assays in the early 1980s I'm delighted to be back in the industry again. In 2012 ProKyma, in partnership with the University of Liverpool’s Centre for Tissue Engineering and the Pancreatic Cancer Unit located at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, was awarded a three year GBP 500,000 i4i (Invention for Innovation) grant from the research arm of the UK National Health Service for the development of methods for CTC detection in the blood of cancer patients. The project proved to be very successful and the company and academic partners have shown that a ‘liquid biopsy’ approach involving next generation sequencing (NGS) of CTC genomes is applicable in pancreatic cancer patients.
