I'm a UK-based science communicator and Project Officer passionate about bridging scientific inquiry with public understanding. I achieved a Bachelor's in Zoology from the University of Glasgow and a Master's in Ecology and the Environment from the University of Lancaster, which laid a strong foundation for my multidisciplinary approach to science and research. In 2017, I shifted to science communication and education, completing a degree in education and teaching from Liverpool John Moores University in 2019. Since then I have contributed to organising communication activities with the Malta Chamber of Scientists, including their annual science and arts festival, Science in the City.Currently, I work with EU projects at the European Science Engagement Association (EUSEA), focusing on communications and dissemination for the citizen science projects Step Change and IMPETUS. My journey reflects a commitment to making science accessible and inspiring, fostering connections between scientific knowledge and society's broader understanding.

Project OfficerEusea European Science Engagement Association Mar 2021 - PresentSince March 2021, I've served as a project officer at EUSEA, spearheading communications and dissemination efforts for four Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe projects. These include initiatives like Our Space Our Future, aimed at inspiring youth from low science capital communities to explore space science careers, and ResBios, promoting the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) framework in European Bioscience research institutions. Currently, I focus on projects like Step Change, advocating for Citizen Science in conservation, health, and energy sectors, and IMPETUS, a Citizen Science accelerator aligned with the Green Deal and UN Sustainable Development Goals. My responsibilities span social media management, website administration, content creation, copywriting, and reporting. Through these projects, I've fostered collaborations across academia and public engagement, deepening my understanding of participatory research and the impact of RRI and citizen science approaches. Additionally, I contribute to organizing events, including the EUSEA conference, a premier science engagement gathering in Europe. -

Eu Project Officer And ReseacherSciculture Dec 2019 - Mar 2021MaltaSciCulture represents a collaborative initiative involving five European higher education institutions, dedicated to fostering a design thinking ethos in problem-solving while facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration among the arts, sciences, and entrepreneurship. To achieve this SciCulture organises intensive workshops where participants are encouraged to learn from each other and use lateral and creative approaches to solving wicked problems. SciCulture Ambassadors are then encouraged to run their design thinking events within their communities and help others adopt a trans-disciplinary approach to problem-solving.Within this SciCulture, I created and executed a bespoke communications plan for their 2020 workshop enrollment, which included curating and generating compelling content across diverse social media platforms, creating promotional materials, blog writing and interviews, all of which was disseminated through SciCulture's extensive communication channels.

Life Science TechnicianAnglian Water Services May 2015 - Oct 2017I worked in the biology laboratory, conducting water quality tests throughout the water treatment process. This involved extensive laboratory and scope work as well as vigorous quality control. It included monitoring levels of chlorophyll, algae, and zooplankton within water samples. In addition, I monitored aquatic environments by conducting invertebrate sampling techniques and taking water samples from rivers and reservoirs. I also worked on a project to supplement the Environment Agency with information on the spread of invasive species throughout the reservoirs managed by Anglian Water. -
Research AssistantHarper Adams University Aug 2013 - Feb 2015I worked on a DEFRA-funded project to investigate alternative stale seedbed techniques and alternative treatments to encourage grass-weed germination and to break primary dormancy in Black-Grass (Alopecurus myosuroides) seeds, to synchronise weed emergence. Our main focus was to determine if the use of smoke-derived products which have been shown to stimulate plant growth and germination in a number of plant groups. This has involved extensive laboratory work, greenhouse experiments, and on-site field trails. I also presented the early findings of these experiments at the 2013 British Crop Protection Council Conference. -

Invasive Species InternWildlife Trust Apr 2012 - Sep 2012MalpasI worked with the Cheshire Wildlife Trust on a voluntary basis, helping to conduct riparian surveys along the River Gowy in Cheshire to determine the prevalence of invasive plant species (Himalayan Balsam) along the river banks. Working with their Invasive Species Officer, I helped to coordinate volunteer groups and participated in the working parties tasked to remove Himalayan Balsam from waterways around Cheshire. Hopefully this will have had an impact on reducing the abundance of this highly competitive invasive species in future seasons. This work involved a number of training opportunities including health and safety procedures, communicating with volunteers of a range of ages to raise awareness of the threat these invasive species pose to native British habitats.
