I build tools to help understand climate change impacts, forecast risk, and respond to risks from climate change. I work with public and private sector organisations to help them better understand climate change risks and to reduce risk. My scientific research has been widely cited and has also been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, Wired, Carbon Brief, among others. I was a Coordinating Lead Author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and have acted in a consulting or advisory role for multiple institutions including the World Bank, United Nations Environment Programme, and multiple government agencies.I lead the Climate Risk Lab (climaterisklab.com). The lab integrates data and methods from environmental and social sciences to inform more rapid, just and equitable responses to climate change. We are based at the African Climate and Development Initiative at the University of Cape Town.I am the Director of the African Synthesis Centre on Climate Change, Environment and Development (ASCEND). ASCEND brings teams of scientists and decision-makers together to accelerate discoveries for enhanced action on climate change for vulnerable people and places (see https://ascendclimate.org/). I co-wrote a choose-your-own adventure game about how the choices we make today shape our climate changed future. It has been used in classrooms and boardrooms around the world.
