When I was little, I had an aquarium that I loved. It was a small tank containing three fish, a stingray, and a shark. One day, the aquarium disappeared. When I asked my dad why the fish vanished, he said, “they’re still there, let me show you.” He instructed me to crawl under the desk and hit the power button. He guided my hand on the mouse to click on the start menu, control panel, screensavers, and finally to the aquarium option.That’s where my journey with computers began, and it’s brought me to where I am today. I’m a software engineer with a passion for React, Redux, Javascript and more. Like all journeys, the path wasn’t always straightforward. I first learned about coding and programming through a web development class in high school. We only learned HTML and CSS, but it was enough to inspire me to study computer science in college.In college I learned Python, object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, digital logic, C+ and more. It was difficult, but my love for technology never faltered. I pursued an economics major and a computer science minor. Every summer I worked in an IT position, learning about hardware, Linux, and gaining experience problem solving. After college I worked as a loan officer, but I realized it wasn’t right for me. I took a leap of faith, and found my way back to coding. I recently graduated from App Academy, a coding bootcamp that focuses on full-stack engineering. For more than 80 hours a week for the past six months, I’ve been learning everything I can about software engineering, with a focus on React, Redux, Express.js, Flask, PostgreSQL, and more. I’m currently looking for a full-time software engineer or developer role.There’s no aquarium on my screensaver anymore, but the magic of coding is absolutely still there. Building an app from scratch today is just as incredible as it was to change the screensaver 20 years ago.
