This is urgent care/ family medicine out-patient practice appointment. A part clinical, part administrative appointment.

Occupational Medicine, outpatient clinic.This is an occupational medicine only clinical appointment with administrative duties. I continued to manage workplace injuries while supervising physician extender staff and oversaw the day-to-day activities of the clinic. Clinical activities included managing musculoskeletal injuries, trauma to the eyes, burns, occupational exposures, viewing and interpreting x-rays and suturing wounds. Clinical duties also included performing pre-employment physical assessments and federally regulated FMCSA driver certifications (DOT exams). Administrative responsibilities included ensuring compliance with company policies and guidelines and ensuring the clinic met set goals. I visited company sites and made recommendations that assisted with reducing on-the-job injuries. I made formal presentations to workers compensation insurance company employees to assist them with a better understanding of clinical scenarios.

Occupational Medicine, outpatient clinic. This clinical assignment involves the management of work place injuries, whichincludes musculoskeletal injuries, trauma to the eyes, burns, viewing andinterpreting x-rays, suturing wounds. I perform pre-employment assessments ofpotential employees of various companies and government entities. This involvesdetailed clinical examinations including audiology, vision screening and drug andTB screens. I visit the company sites, provide recommendations, based onscientific evidence and the local work-place environment, that influence employeesafety and help reduce on the job injuries.I perform federally regulated clinical examinations. Being a certified medicalreview officer (MRO), I review drug screen results for federally regulated andnon-regulated drug screens.As part of my duties I also perform evaluations for the Georgia DisabilityAdjunction Services (DAS). Performing an in depth assessment of clients withvarious disabilities, including musculoskeletal disorders, psychiatric disorders andneurological disorders. Detailed reports are submitted to the DAS which are usedin determining the client’s eligibility for social security services

Locum tenens appointments, providing general surgery services to the country’spublic health system. I attend to general surgery patients in the out-patient clinicand in-patient wards, perform elective surgeries and provide on-call emergencycoverage for the hospitals, which includes general surgery emergencies, vascularemergencies and trauma surgery.

I worked with the bariatric and general surgery clinic providing pre-operative andpost-operative care to bariatric and general surgical patients. I ensured patients’eligibility for bariatric surgery, presented educational seminars to bariatric patientsand conducted out-patient clinics for continued care after surgery. This includedscheduled on-call

One year comprehensive training in the surgical management of obesity andminimally invasive approaches to abdominal general surgery. Here, I learned theimpact of obesity on patient health and on the health system, with emphasis on amultidisciplinary approach to the treatment of obesity. Involved pre-operativeassessment, performing surgeries, upper gastrointestinal endoscopies,postoperative care of surgical and, particularly, bariatric patients and emergencycare of patients on the service. I also gained experience in re-operative bariatricprocedures.During the fellowship year, I attended sponsored laparoscopic specialty courses. I conducted clinical research on the performance of bariatric surgery as an outpatientprocedure, which was presented as a poster at the American Society forMetabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Obesity Week annual conference, inAtlanta, Georgia. I also taught and supervised medical students who rotatedthrough the service at regular intervals throughout the year.

I provided general surgery services to the country’s main hospital in a newly built,Canadian owned facility. I also managed emergency cases of related sub-specialtiesand performed upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopies. I worked with thedialysis and oncology units, performing arterio-venous fistula surgery and vascularcatheter procedures. I provided trauma services to the hospital with follow up careon the surgical ward and the intensive care unit.Working alongside the human resources department, I recruited, interviewed andselected for short-term coverage and replacement of hospital staff.I served as an active member of the hospital’s infection control committee and theoperating room’s accreditation committee. During my tenure on the operatingroom’s accreditation committee the hospital was awarded the highest level ofaccreditation from Accreditation Canada (a non-profit organization that performsaccreditation of Canadian and international medical facilities).

Taught and examined medical students in general surgery both in the classroomand clinical settings. I had the opportunity to groom students from their earlyexposure to clinical medicine and then prepare final year students for their finalsurgery examinations and entry into internship. This assignment also saw meteaching and supervising residents in the university’s general surgery program

Provided general surgery services to the referral center for the western half of thecountry. Obtained experience with a wide range of general surgery cases includingbreast surgery, colorectal surgery, biliary tract surgery, diabetic feet, abdominaland peripheral vascular disease including, lower limb amputations and major casesrequiring intensive care unit management. I also worked closely with the hospital’sdialysis unit performing AV fistula surgery.This hospital is the major trauma center for the western half of the island and thus Iaccumulated experience in trauma surgery, managing major trauma cases from the emergency room through to the operating room, the intensive care unit and ontodischarge and rehabilitation.I oversaw a surgical team, organizing patient flow, operating room lists andoutpatient clinics. I supervised and taught surgical residents, interns and medicalstudents.While assigned here I conducted medical research and published papers in peer-reviewed journals. The paper on sentinel lymph node biopsy in breast cancerspearheaded a more widespread use of this technique in Jamaica and the Caribbeanat large.

This was a post-residency appointment. Provided general surgery services at thelevel of a consultant (attending) while awaiting appointment to an approved post.In Jamaica, there are a limited number of available posts for consultant (attending)physicians within the hospital system while the need far exceeds the availability. Therefore, qualified physicians routinely work in the post of a chief resident whileproviding the services of a consultant (attending) until an appropriate post is madeavailable. The responsibilities and experience gained in this assignment are thesame as those of being the consultant (attending) general surgeon and are outlinedabove.

Lectured and examined nursing students in classroom setting on traumamanagement, pre-operative and post-operative care of general surgery and traumapatients.
