About Chris W.

My career path has taken me from scientist and researcher to director-level leader. Deep knowledge and experience in biotechnology and biochemical engineering allow me to manage complex scientific work and diverse multi-disciplinary teams in manufacturing, quality, sales, and R&D to attain operational goals. The work and people in the world of R&D are diverse. I have developed a well-honed skillset that balances emotional intelligence and people skills with technical and scientific expertise. During college, I discovered my love for math and chemistry and became intrigued by how scale and energy easily transferred to biochemistry. When my dad got sick and received an experimental clinical treatment that saved his life, I committed to using my talents in math and biochemistry to help people. One of my most significant achievements was getting the Bovine Gamma Globulin Process completed. I began as the designer of the process and ended up as project leader for product development for a top 3 company in Vitro Diagnostic. A crucial part of my leadership was training the team on the importance of problem-solving through cross-functional collaboration. What makes me an effective leader and scientist and differentiates me from others:• Experience leading diverse areas of clinical research, bioprocessing, and basic mechanisms of action research.• Deep expertise in chemistry and biochemistry process development and scale-up, complex scientific projects and clinical trials, product development, data analytics and reporting, lab operations management, industry publications, and presentations.• Leadership that communicates trust and confidence empowers the team to take initiative and ownership, make smart decisions, and view mistakes as opportunities for learning while providing support. • Working collaboratively to connect concepts, people, and resources to leverage collective knowledge and improve group function.• Ability to make connections between ideas or experiences that initially appear unrelated but actually hold connections that can accelerate the work. • Thoughtful consideration of choices and their implications, anticipation of results, and impact on experimental designs—always beginning and working with the end in mind.• Can switch between thinking strategically and dealing with the minutiae quickly. My ultimate goal is to lead scientific teams with a diversity of projects that make major impacts on the growth of revenues in new or current markets with products that improve people's lives or are in the chain of improving people's lives.

Based off this project I generated ideas for additional research projects involving structure-function relationships, binding thermodynamics, enzyme kinetics, protein stability, and reaction modeling. Although I ran the majority of the experiments, I was also responsible for managing and integrating eleven undergraduate and Master’s students into my projects leading to publishable data. I led collaborations with groups in the Food Science, Chemistry, and Molecular Biology Departments on published works and helped prepare a successful application for beam-time at the Argonne National Lab synchrotron. I had full access to the X-ray crystallography facility where I set-up my crystallization plates, screened freezing conditions, screen crystals to obtain diffraction data, collected data sets, and modeled structures. I presented my research at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers conference in November 2008. My work during this time led to three published journal articles as primary author and a fourth that has been submitted. Show less
