Senior Neutronics Engineer
I have developed a bespoke application of the Geant4 toolkit to streamline Neutronics calculations on complex geometries. The application enables direct import of surface mesh geometry elements in the STL file format and volume mesh geometry in the VTK file format. Automatic variance reduction with weight windows is implemented on surface conforming volume meshes and rigorous 2-step activation and shutdown dose rate calculations on the same mesh have been demonstrated and validated against international benchmarks.I have also developed an in-house fusion power plant system code that links plasma physics with reactor engineering, power extraction and conversion, and economic models to inform strategic decision making. Leveraging the power of python programming language with great open-source tools such as FreeCAD the code is able to rapidly generate models for downstream analysis by expert design teams.
Senior Radiation Transport Analyst
Principal Scientist - Radiation Dosimetry
I provided expertise in the detection and measurement of ionising radiation in support of AWE's regulated external dosimetry systems. I used a combination of Monte Carlo radiation-transport codes (MCNP and Geant4) and bespoke data analysis codes (VBA, C++, Java) to test the capabilities of existing dosemeters and neutron spectrometers, and to explore new design concepts. To validate the computational studies I worked in multi-disciplinary, multi-national teams to conduct experiments both at home and abroad.I contributed to developments in the field of radiation protection and dosimetry through participation in national and international working groups. I ensured that AWE's dosimetry conforms to international standards and best practice through attendance at conferences. Alongside my technical work I managed a team delivering co-ordination and record keeping services approved by the Health and Safety Executive.I also sponsored innovation in the analytical sciences that support AWE's regulatory compliance, allocating a budget of ~£1M per year to the development and integration of new techniques and processes.

Generally surveyors worked away from home for 4 days a week and were paired for this period so that one member of the pair navigated while another drove. Excellent team work and inter-personal skills were required to work so closely with a colleague. Prior to the survey one member of the pair would be made resonsible for planning the survey to increase efficiency when on location. This required good analytical skills and the ability to extrapolate qualities of the human environment from topographical information. I identified new resources for improving this planning process. The survey itself required good observational skills and interpretation of observables in terms of the survey framework.I also trained external clients (Local Authority staff) to perform the survey to help them to fulfill their responsibilities under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
