Data Analyst / Report Developer

Vancouver, Canada Area

As the company's first data-focused employee, I did a bunch of different things with data. The product wasn't particularly strong with usage reporting, so I wrote SQL queries against the database and produced dashboards and data reports for product, engineering, client success, marketing, and senior leaders. I met with internals to work out what they needed, why, and what was available. Depending on the question, reports included projections, analysis, suggestions for future automation, and suggestions for engineering work. I prioritized requests according to business value (maintained a JIRA project for this). One of the top priorities was to work out ETL specifications for main company-level (as opposed to department/team-level) metrics.

Product Manager

Peer Giving Solutions

Peer Giving Solutions

As a product manager, it was my responsibility to prioritize customer wants against market needs, keep a backlog of work pruned, have a mind to what the market problems were, and ensure that our developers had what they needed to execute their roles well. I also kept stake-holders informed on the team's progress. It was often also up to me to design new product features, both in terms of look and usability.I continued to serve as a front-end developer lead, where I built and/or approved everything front-end. It was also my job to take customer-driven website designs (typography, branding, navigation) and apply them to instances of our product.

Full Stack Dev (Front-End Lead)

Peer Giving Solutions

Vancouver, Canada Area

Peer Giving is a web-application tailored to the needs of charities. It facilitates fundraising, both through community-focused story telling and accounting tools. I was the resident CSS/LESS/JS/HTML guru on a team of four developers at Peer Giving. Basically if something was built, I built the front-end. I also worked in the backend frequently, in C#, SQL, IIS, server side scripting, etc. Charities licensing the product get an instance of the base product with a base theme, and a custom theme on top. In the early 2010's, these themes consisted of custom style sheets and custom database entries. The style sheets were stand-alone, meaning they simply added new rules on top of the base theme. As we scaled, managing the custom themes became time-intensive, because when the base-theme was updated, each of the themes needed to be hand-adjusted to work with the updates. Each theme was affected in a unique way. The solution we came up with was to limit what could be controlled by a custom theme, by introducing a new front-end architecture that allowed for the creation of LESS/CSS variables which were set for the base theme and could be modified by the custom themes. In this way, we could anticipate which themes would be affected by what updates to the base theme, and how.
