I have done many different things in my career both in the private and public sectors: strategic quality management, events management, courseware accreditation, competency-based skills framework development, training and assessment, literacy and numeracy development, managed a computerised adaptive testing centre, industry engagement, and now career coaching. What I found is that I enjoy work that is meaningful, work that can make people’s lives better, be it making better products or better policies. I also enjoy work that is challenging, whether it is solving an engineering problem or designing policies that nudge people to do things differently. Although I naturally prefer working alone, I do enjoy being part of a high-performing team, whether as a leader or a follower.As a leader, I believe in rewarding people not solely for what they have achieved, but also how they have achieved the results. Values matter to me. As a follower, my most important contribution to the team is to help the leader succeed, regardless of the person’s age, gender, nationality, qualification, or experience. And even when our views on things don’t fully align. I am also a “career practicologist”. I study career development theories and practices as a discipline. I research, explore, and analyse the social, cultural, and historical contexts of these theories and practices. I try to gain policy insights from these theoretical perspectives. A career practicologist is to a career practitioner what a musicologist is to a musician. On a personal note, I love to travel, learn new languages, watch movies and dramas. I enjoy the machinations in the Three Kingdoms, Nirvana; the sharp wit in Blackadder, Yes Minister; the foibles in The Office, Curb Your Enthusiasm; the inspiration in Waiting for Superman, 3 Idiots; the intrigue in Inside Job, Too Big to Fail; and the thrill in Underworld, 2012. If you share the same interests, I'll be happy to connect! I also enjoy swimming very much, and I play the guitar, drums, and piano for leisure. My personal hobbies may seem irrelevant for a work profile but they – together with my work experience – are a reflection of what I am at the workplace and at home. In a nutshell, as a result of years of observing people both in reel life as well as real life, I have come to practise five skills that I bring to every appointment I have held over the years. They are philosophical clarity, policy acumen, planning excellence, political sensitivity, and public governance.Happiness is the highest goal in life. Strive for it!
