SenatorVermont State Senate 2012 - PresentMontpelier, VtI have the honor of serving in the Vermont State Senate, representing the district of Addison County, Huntington, Buel's Gore, and Rochester. My overarching goal is to assist our state in developing a stronger, healthier local economy, especially in the areas in which I work most directly: energy, natural resources, farming, food, and forestry. I founded our state's Farm to Plate program, the Biomass Energy Development Working Group, and I led in the Senate on our state's Renewable Portfolio Standard and Energy Siting. Currently, I'm leading an effort to make a clear statutory commitment to plan for 100% renewable energy by 2030; this provides a powerful opportunity to save Vermonters energy and money, while also creating new employment, improving public health, and decreasing environmental impacts. In addition, we need to protect our vital resources, and I led the Senate's development of the Vermont Clean Water Act. We have decades of work ahead of us across the state to protect our clean waters and clean up our polluted waters. I'm also working on reducing Vermonters' exposure to toxic chemicals in our environment through a variety of strategies, including enhancing our ability to respond to issues and working to prevent them in the first place. I serve as Chair of the Senate Natural Resources and Energy Committee; Vice-Chair of the Joint Energy Committee; and member of the Senate Finance Committee and Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules. I'm a past Chair of the Legislative IT Committee; member of the Government Operations Committee; Senate Education Committee; Vermont Economic Progress Council; and the board of the Vermont Telecommunications Authority. -
