For over 30 years, I have been trying to change to public perception of the real estate industry. Like most commission-based industries, we attract many people seeking their fortune. Many of my competitors perpetuate the myth that anyone can make good money in real estate. Unfortunately the truth is very different. As any successful person will tell you, trying something and making a commitment to succeeding is very different. The problem is that as an industry we doesn't hold people to minimum standards of production. That leads to overcrowding in offices, poor training and too many agents selling one or two homes a year and calling themselves professional real estate agents. The two just don’t go together. For years, brokers (or owners of real estate companies) have just promoted hiring quantity over hiring quality and, in my view, this continues to hold our industry back from being considered a true profession. I understand why brokers do this, but recently I have come to the decision that there is a better way and we at BHHSNJ are pursuing it. Our mission is to hire fewer, better trained, full-time professionals or as BHHS likes to say, "trusted advisors" that will produce a "minimum standard " of production a year. The industry deserves this, and more importantly, the house buying and selling public deserves this.Our strengths are in part related to the fact that we have smaller, better-trained offices. We are not looking for 100-200 agents in an office. Our name, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, is fast becoming known as the most professional brand in the industry. Better hiring practices, training, tools and being associated with Warren Buffett makes for an unbeatable combination. That combined with a strong social media-marketing platform will continue to propel us to the top of the industry. In my view, being number one has nothing to do with size and everything to do with the quality in which you deliver your services, daily.
