App Development Consultant
CurrentApp Development Consulting | Expert Android Developer | Engineering ManagerCSAppConsulting.comI offer services to help companies build a solid app development team and/or develop their initial Android apps. Building a solid app development team can be difficult and time consuming, and without a solid development background it's difficult to ensure you're hiring the right people and setting them up for success. I help jumpstart the development process by putting in place the right processes and recruiting criteria to ensure success. With a background in both startups and established companies, I know how to blend the best of both worlds. All services are offered on a limited contract basis (usually 3-9 months). I stand behind all contract work and will be happy to give brief advice on previous work or resume work under the same terms, if needed. I'm primarily available for remote work with any company in the United States, but can do on site visits for offices in the greater Los Angeles area.
Contract Android Developer
I was brought on as a contract Android Developer to add custom Bluetooth communication between their existing Android app and a new motorcycle HUD being developed. After completing that, I continued working on the project, integrating new/updated UI and fixing bugs in the existing app. I worked in parallel with multiple teams (contracted and in house) on the large existing codebase over the span of 16 months, during which the team I was on consistently delivered high quality features and improvements, resulting in the contract being extended multiple times to keep us on the project. Work was primarily done remotely, including working with bench units sent to me for some bikes, except the one under development, which I had to travel to test and debug on site.
Senior Engineering Manager, Mobile
Coordinated the work of all of Android developers at Tala: up to 13 developers at any given time, across 6 countries and numerous timezones. I provided organizational and technical guidance in the development and maintenance of the company's app, which had over 15 million installs across 4 different countries. I was also responsible for direct management and oversight of all full time and contract Android developers outside of India, including performance reviews, candidate assessments, and final hiring/firing decisions.During my time at Tala, I spearheaded numerous technical initiatives, including modularizing the large existing codebase for easier maintenance, restructuring the underlying feature release/feedback loop to improve stability and consistency, and selecting a vendor to standardize all customization under. Within the Android developer group, I worked to foster both a sense of personal responsibility for individual work and broader sense of responsibility to the group, to maximize cohesion and throughput while minimizing disproportionate contributions and overall attrition rates. In order to head off any potential issues, I maintained regular contact with all managers responsible for teams doing Android work, and coordinated with them to ensure everyone's needs were being met. In cases where critical issues arose related to Android, I helped to coordinate responses and triage solutions.
Founder & Lead Developer
Lead software development with the goal of creating a new open source web technology focused on creating more effective way for large communities to collaborate online. The project was based on Google's Polymer Web Component framework, combining HTML, CSS, and Javascript to create encapsulated and reusable web components.
Founder & Project Manager
I founded this organization to help fill the gap between the dreamers and doers of the world. There are people with big dreams for the future, often referred to as futurists, but they don't usually provide a plan for reaching what they've described. On the other end there are people creating innovative products and structures, but usually they don't move us much closer to the "better" future described by futurists. By bringing together futurists and innovators we hoped to streamline the process of developing a better future. Our first project toward this goal was the Collaboration Tree framework: an open source, online collaborative design platform.
Lead Android Developer
Led Android development of the new Play Disney Parks app. I was the first Android developer on the project, leading a team of up to 12 other developers, and saw it through all the way to launch 10 months later. Our team handled development of all core functionality to support features like beacon detection, interfacing with in-park interactive elements, synchronizing online data, and hosting games. This included a coordinated launch of new features when the new Star Wars Galaxy's Edge land opened at Disneyland.
