Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

The Galapagos National Park is considering privatizing the local spiny lobster fishery. I was chosen as an intern by Conservation International's in-house economist to analyze this policy. I generated a report and economic models describing efficiency gains from applying a Territorial Use Rights in Fishery (TURF) system to the Galapagos red Spiny Lobster fishery, the costs of applying and running a TURF system and who would bear those costs.I also designed and coded an economic experiment using z-tree to identify the changes in behavior of fishers participating in the TURF and the efficiency gains from applying such a regime.

Jefferson City, Missouri

I was an intern for 3 state senators.While there I used operating systems to help citizens handle local issues.Organized events.Logged press mentions and communicated with constituents.I also conducted research to aid the Senators in their committee presentations.It was a great experience and I was able to discuss issues with the senators and learn from them about what was underneath the issue. I also was able to meet with many citizens, other politicians, government officials, staff, lobbyists, and others to learn from them and their experiences.As an intern at the Missouri State Senate, I witnessed first-hand how environmental policies affect the economy. This experience helped me realize how the effects of a specific policy action can reverberate throughout the economy and nation as a whole. As an intern I was able to observe one of the major legislative issues: Missouri’s policies regarding captive cervids (such as deer and elk), who should regulate them, and how much this industry should be regulated to prevent the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease. Since Sen. Brown is a large animal veterinarian I received a great education from him on the intricacies of this situation and other issues involving natural resources. I also got to hear from elk and deer breeders, members of the Departments of Conservation and Agriculture, the meat processing industry, citizen groups, farrmers, and other stakeholders. I was even able to talk to lobbyists and officials from the state departments of conservation and agriculture who worked with Senator Brown on these and other issues.

Aided graduate students conducting ichthyological research, conducted independent research on change in various fish species populations across seasons and years (for college credit). Had to use ArcGIS programs, Excel, and R extensively to complete projects. Worked in teams on other students projects and independently on my project.The last year I attended SLU I was engaged in independent research using computer programs such as ArcGIS, R, and Excel to identify how changes in the parameters of a nearby stream (Labarque Stream) were affecting the location of fish over seasons and years. The factors being analyzed included such factors as depth, canopy height above water level, percentage of canopy coverage above the stream, dissolved oxygen content, average stream flow, benthic stream flow, surface flow, mid-level water flow, temperature, and sediment composition. This was a long term, large-scale project with data collection beginning in 2009, and I completed the project in the spring of 2013. When the research was completed, I presented its findings and a poster detailing the project at the annual Sigma Xi, and IFSA Research Symposium & Spring Meeting at Saint Louis University in April of 2013.
