Network Architect
CurrentCENIC provides high-performance networking for research and education in California. I started as a Core Engineer in September 2022, and have dived head first into the world of BGP and peering. I am also leading CENIC's RPKI implementation and other routing security efforts, including MANRS conformance.
Network Engineer
My job title was technically "Research Engineer", which really meant I was responsible for everything from DC power systems to AWS cloud administration to scalable network design to full-on software development. I have a very broad set of skills and experience that helped me excel at all aspects of this role, but my passion is network engineering—and managing the Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) network infrastructure was my primary responsibility at this job.Key experience:❯ Designed and maintained the routing, switching, and virtual private networking infrastructure for 500+ seismic monitoring stations across Southern California.❯ Designed and implemented a scalable IPsec VPN system, providing secure access to equipment at hundreds of remote locations.❯ Overhauled a legacy routing infrastructure, replacing a mix of EIGRP, RIP, and static routes with a unified multi-area OSPF configuration.❯ Developed device provisioning scripts in Python, interfacing with NetBox (IPAM/DCIM) REST API to retrieve and store network information.❯ Established multicast routing (PIM-SM) over secure tunnels to an Amazon Web Services (AWS) VPC, and maintained routing tables and security groups for EC2 instances.❯ Planned and executed field campaigns to build 50+ new seismic stations for the Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) program. Designed autonomous solar-powered 12V/24V DC electrical systems.❯ Became an expert at interfacing with Quanterra Q8 and Q330 seismic digitizers. Used protocol documentation and Wireshark analysis to build custom monitoring and management software in Python and Rust.
Seismic Network Technician
This role at the Alaska Earthquake Center (AEC) was around 40% travel to some of the most remote places in Alaska to build, maintain, and repair seismic monitoring stations. The other 60% was spent in the lab, troubleshooting issues and building systems to improve the uptime, resiliency, and monitoring capabilities of our critical public safety network infrastructure.Key experience:❯ Implemented and managed Nagios (an open-source network monitoring system) to monitor uptime and track state of health history of 500+ network devices across Alaska.❯ Implemented IPsec VPNs and OSPF routing on routers and cell modems at remote field sites.❯ Participated in an on-call rotation to respond to major earthquakes and rapidly disseminate information to government, media, and the public.❯ Planned and executed field campaigns to install, service, and upgrade seismic monitoring stations across Alaska.❯ Became an expert at configuring seismic digitizers and other specialized scientific equipment for earthquake monitoring.
Graduate Research Assistant
Research assistant for the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) and UAF Geophysical Institute.Key experience:❯ Installed and serviced temporary seismic monitoring stations at Uturuncu Volcano in southern Bolivia.❯ Analyzed seismic waveforms and located earthquakes in research datasets using MATLAB and Perl scripts.❯ Participated in an on-call rotation at the Alaska Volcano Observatory to evaluate seismic data and respond to possible volcanic activity.
Geophysics Intern
Geophysical/seismic interpretation for natural gas exploration. Summer internship.Key experience:❯ Completed a seismic interpretation project seeking natural gas in northeastern British Columbia.❯ Used in-house and third-party software for 3D seismic interpretation, well log interpretation, synthetic seismograms, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Junior Geoscience Technician
Summer internship at the Geological Survey of Canada. Map digitization, data entry and analysis, well log processing.Key experience:❯ Digitized field notes and geological maps.❯ Developed custom scripts (PHP, VBScript, Asymptote) to process, display, and map well log data and other large datasets.
Student Business Advisor
Employee at Student Connections, a federally-funded student employment program to promote e-business and Internet literacy to small/medium businesses and senior citizens.Key experience:❯ Taught courses on Microsoft Office, e-business, and basic computer skills to groups and individuals, including senior citizens.❯ Provided web consulting, programming (mainly PHP), and design for clients in Calgary and Southern Alberta.
