When training and working extensively in the environmental sciences in Africa, with a specific bend on using remotely sensed data for natural resource management, I came to enjoy working on the mathematical side of this field using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems. I taught classes at university level, published my research in this field, worked for private industry, and I continue to be an active reviewer of remote sensing research at Springer Publishing. To get the technical skills needed to become a developer of tools for this work, after my Doctorate I decided to pursue my second Master's degree: this time in Computer Science. During my time at the University of Montana I focused on data structures, algorithms, and machine learning, even teaching a graduate class on the fundamentals of machine learning-aided data analysis. I wanted to use these skills to become a builder of remote sensing systems, not just a user.So it is that I find myself living in Montana, working at Skyfish where we are building a world leading toolset for autonomous sUAS data collection. Now that I have moved from academia into private industry, my focus is on creating tools that allow sUAS pilots to make smart data collection decisions during autonomous flight. I help lead a small team of engineers that is responsible for building and delivering these tools. Working at the cutting edge of remote sensing is challenging in many ways, but it's very satisfying and I'm excited for what the future brings.

Head Of SoftwareSkyfish Oct 2023 - PresentMissoula, Montana, United StatesAs Head of Software at Skyfish I am responsible for the development and maintenance of all software in our aircraft and ground control systems. As an aerial robotics platform, our software tools need to be closely linked to the hardware and my team works closely with electrical engineers to produce a cutting edge product. We use machine vision to create autonomous flight control systems. Our development uses a number of languages, frameworks and tools including C/C++ and associated build tools, Java and associated build tools, XML, Android, C#, JavaScript/HTML/CSS, Linux, Windows, and many more. Our goal is to produce world leading products that help shape the future of the industry. -
Senior Software Engineer And System ArchitectSkyfish Jun 2022 - Nov 2023Missoula, Montana, United StatesIn this role I was primarily responsible for the development of a ground control station and the associated software for controlling our aircraft. We developed in Java and C++ for the Android operating system, with a number of integrated hardware controls that provided aircraft and payload control. -
