Postdoctoral Fellow
• Conducted experiments on the nano-scale mechanical and morphological properties of natural biocomposite materials such as normal and laser ablated human tooth enamel, mineralized and unmineralized turkey leg tendon, and collagen using both an Interfacial Force Microscope (IFM) and an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). • Conducted surface roughness measurements with an AFM to establish optimal conditions for H2 plasma etching of GaAs. • Co-designed and built low noise closed-loop force feedback electronics for the IFM. Converted a commercially available AFM into a fully operational IFM as part of a highly successful Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Digital Instruments. • Developed techniques for calibrating the self-balancing differential capacitance force sensor in the IFM.
Graduate Research Assistant
• Conducted thesis research on energy transfer, charge transfer, and trapping in hyperthermal energy collisions of alkali ions with clean metal surfaces. • Experimentally demonstrated limitations in the trajectory approximation widely used to model ion scattering from surfaces, and published the results in a Physical Review Letter.• Used a combination of experiment and simulation to, for the first time, demonstrate trajectory dependent charge transfer in ion scattering from surfaces, and published the results in a Physical Review Letter.• Used a combination of experiment and simulation to demonstrate anomalous surface trapping due to image force interactions and corrugations in the surface scattering potential in ion scattering from surfaces, and published the results in a Physical Review Letter.• Designed, machined, and constructed a sputter ion gun for sample cleaning, including design & construction of the ion optics, mounting hardware, and control electronics.• Designed a vacuum pumping system for an Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) chamber; and designed and constructed a vibration isolated mechanical pump foreline for connection to a scanning tunneling microscopy apparatus. • Used Auger Electron Spectroscopy, Low Energy Electron Diffraction, Residual Gas Analysis (Mass Spectroscopy), Low Energy Ion Scattering (LEIS), and other techniques in the course of conducting UHV experiments. • Wrote and implemented computer programs for data analysis, and ran computer simulations to model ion scattering. • Refined existing techniques and developed new laser-based techniques for the alignment of the sample, ion beam line, and ion detector in the low energy ion scattering apparatus.
