My responsibilities include basic scientic research in conductive and semiconductive organic materials and the simultaneous inception of a laboratory for printing functional materials. The appointment is part ofa joint venture between the Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design & Graphics and the Center for Optical Materials Science & Engineering Technologies (COMSET) at Clemson University. This Functional Materials Fabrication Studio will afford the campus community and corporate partners the opportunity to take novel functional materials and formulate them into functional inks to be used in a printing environment for high-throughput additive manufacturing processes. The mission I’ve established is to create safe, printable inks from materials that can create electronic, optical, sensory and memory elements integrated onto packaging.

During my time at Streamline, I was able to assemble a pilot plant manufacturing facility producing high-purity silicon nanocomposite materials for Lithium ion battery anodes. Ultimately, my successes with the company helped lead to its acquisition in mid-2011. It was fascinating to make the change from organic to silicon based materials while maintaining my drive to work in R&D for positive progress in our society.
