I help banks, non-bank lenders, fintechs, alternative finance companies, and other financial services institutions navigate complex regulatory and compliance issues. In particular, I work with secured and unsecured lenders to solve problems and institute solutions related to consumer loan origination. I have experience working with mortgage loan originators to address issues related to the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA), the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA), the Real Estate Settlement Practices Act (RESPA), the Truth in Lending Act (TILA), TILA-RESPA Integrated Disclosures (TRID), and LO compensation.I also work with lenders to manage the process of expanding existing products to new states by utilizing a proven process that integrates the client's business, compliance, and legal operations. I have also helped unsecured lenders address a variety of problems and issues related to origination, including fair lending and underwriting, data collection, marketing, and the development and review of new products.On the non-consumer side, I work closely with alternative finance institutions, including Merchant Cash Advance and Factoring Companies, to help develop new products, expand existing products into new jurisdictions, and manage ever-increasing state and federal regulatory burdens. I have spoken and written extensively about the proposed data-collection requirements for small business finance companies under Dodd-Frank 1071, as well as newly proposed small business finance disclosure laws in New York and California. In addition to my regulatory and compliance practice, I work with financial services clients engaged in M&A activity. I have led teams performing regulatory diligence on mortgage loan originators, mortgage servicers, and other companies in the consumer and business-purpose finance space. Prior to joining Husch, I clerked for the Hon. Abdul K. Kallon in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. I was also a class action defense litigator, and am the co-author of the "Settlement" chapter of the ABA's Class Action Strategy and Practice Guide. I am also the co-Editor in Chief of the ABA's Class Action and Derivative Suits Newsletter.
