Upon graduating from High Point University, I had a dream to become a major college athletic director. Since I was not a college athlete, I realized that I must develop a skill that all athletic departments (and other organizations) need … revenue generation. After graduate school, I began cultivating this skill as a business development professional at Tar Heel Sports Marketing in Chapel Hill, N.C.I returned to my alma mater in August 1999 to create an athletic development and marketing program. At the time, High Point University had just become a NCAA Division I university. Almost immediately, I realized HPU was underperforming with less than 1,400 students, high acceptance and discount rates, millions in deferred maintenance, low annual fundraising totals, and a brand that was largely unknown.All of this changed with the arrival of a new president in 2005. From the day he started until July 31, 2023, I served on the president's leadership team. For ten years, as Senior Vice President for Administration and Chief of Staff (among other titles), I led operational areas, including: security, transportation, food services, maintenance, janitorial, landscaping, construction, events, community relations, among others. I planned large scale, university-wide events. I worked closely with the president to implement his aggressive vision for rebranding, reculturing and growth.In 2015, I requested an opportunity to lead the office of institutional advancement. For the following eight years, I served as Senior Vice President for Development, leading a team that raised $450 million. After 24 years at High Point University, I felt called to maximize my skills and experiences to help colleges and universities (and other NPOs) achieve their goals and dreams through revenue generation and advancement strategy.Our company, AdvancementEDU, partners with independent schools, colleges/universities, and nonprofits to generate revenue for greater organizational impact.
