He also managed the external legal advisers across all jurisdictions and had oversight of legal issues affecting the subsidiaries.Christopher was a success as the main board’s legal adviser. Eurotherm’s directors were innovative scientists and technocrats, and with his own science degree background to back up his legal expertise, Christopher understood how the ‘science minds’ worked and could speak to them in their language. Christopher was in his element, working in a fast moving sector and helping the Board to anticipate and resolve risks.Eurotherm was at the forefront of the employee engagement movement, using shares to incentivise and engage senior staff in an era when it was relatively unusual. Christopher gained valuable experience in practical structures which linked engagement and performance and motivation. He managed both executive and employee share option schemes.Christopher was also closely involved in acquisition work, and was engaged in negotiation with principals and drafting agreements. Looseleaf textbooks were the ‘paper’ forerunner of online updating legal services.Christopher’s role involved taking the basic legal source material (UK and EU statutes, regulations, and case reports) and making them into usable and accessible information for lawyers. These books were used by judges, barristers and solicitors.Christopher analysed new statutory material as it was brought out – tying up the relevant case law and generating summary material, so that users of the book could link up the different legal threads quickly and effectively.In 1978 Christopher started work on Harvey on Industrial Relations and Employment Law, the book that was to fire his interest in employment law. Christopher was responsible for the editing and incorporation into Harvey of the 1978 consolidation - bringing together all the employment protection legislation from the previous fifteen years.Harvey was the “go to” place for employment lawyers, and Christopher’s research and updating work on the book for the rest of his Butterworth career gave him a solid grounding in the minutiae of employment protection law. He also worked with eminent authors who contributed to the book.Christopher worked his way up to become head of the department, managing a team of eight people producing about fifteen updating subscription services.
