Birmingham Health Care (BHC) is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with several sites offering primary care. We receive enhance Medicaid reimbursements and qualify for federal funding to help provide services to those with or without medical insurance. As the Governmental Relations Associate for Birmingham Health Care, I am responsible for educating and interacting with federal, state and local elected officials, not-for-profit and for profit organizations, business leaders, community leaders, medical professionals, and others on the operations of this federally qualified health center and its primary care services. Additionally, fostering and developing community partners, coalition building, and educational activities are other important aspects of being the Governmental Relations Associate for Birmingham Health Care.

As Legislative/Political Field Organizer for AFSCME Council 4 I am responsible for designing and implementing a grassroots advocacy program in an assigned geographical region. My duties would include but not be limited to: reaching out to local unions to identify activists; building and manage volunteer canvasses and phone banks; train members on executing grassroots campaigns in their local; work with local unions and coalition partners to develop campaign strategies; raise funds from AFSCME members and families for PEOPLE PAC; assess political climate, candidates and campaigns and prepare reports on potential opportunities and challenges.

Responsible for the day-to-day case management for clients who were facing homelessness as the result of the downward spiral in the economy. In this capacity, I was helped serve 100+ clients and authorized over $150,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) funds.

Managed various special project assignments from the campaign and candidates. Developed comprehensive Get Out the Vote plan/activities for assigned precincts throughout Jefferson County.

Responsible for the development and implementation of campaign strategies for city-wide election held in the City of Birmingham. These activities include facilitation of community meetings, development of strategic plans, supervision of grassroots supporters, crisis management, and other management responsibilities.

Worked for various private sector businesses in Birmingham metropolitan region.

Responsible for the implementation of Get Out of the Vote efforts for the Obama for America/Campaign for Change program in Region 5, which is comprised of Loudoun, Prince William, Fauquier, Stafford, Spotsylvania, Manassas, Manassas Park, and Fredericksburg. Responsible for the day-to-day management of eight (8) Campaign Headquarters, fifteen (15) Field Organizers, and thirty (30) Deputy Field Organizers. Responsible for major back-end lifts such as coordination of housing and training of Out-of-State volunteers, literature distribution and supply procurement.

Coordinated occasional field recruitment campaigns at healthcare facilities to sign up healthcare workers and get them registered with the campaign online or in person; Worked with leaders in worksites to mobilize the healthcare employees to become active in the struggle to make the voices of healthcare workers—nurses, C N A's, technicians—the dominant and most credible voice at the health care reform table; Coordinated voter education and mobilization drives; Identified issues and stories of insurance company, HMO and drug company abuse of patients, preparing potential leaders to tell their stories and developing actions, events and campaigns around the issues.

Project Organizer on International Brotherhood of Teamsters United Parcel Service, First Student/Laidlaw school bus, United Airline (UAL) mechanics, and New Era Cap Co. organizing campaigns. Assisted in the strategy and/or implementation of national organizing drives with/for the IBT. Developed and maintain relationships, where and when necessary, with various labor, community, and religious leaders in many cities to support these organizing drives. Reported information on campaigns either daily or as requested to various IBT leads.

Organized in 27 counties in Alabama to implement a synergistic campaign combining issue organizing and electoral campaigning to build a trained grassroots base to assist the Democratic Party in Alabama. Provided insight and evaluation of county activities to the leadership of the Alabama Democratic Party and Democratic National Committee. Developed and implemented campaign plans in targeted districts. Developed and implemented candidate training’s. Recruited, trained, and managed a network of local precinct leaders. Maintained relationships with County Chairs and key county contacts.

Provided professional administrative services on behalf of the Friends of the Railroad District [FoRRD] Board of Directors. Facilitated and coordinated the exchange of information between FoRRD Board of Directors and the City of Birmingham. Met in person and/or by telephone with representatives of the City of Birmingham. Cultivated regular and consistent contact with members of the FoRRD Board of Directors and the City of Birmingham. Maintained proper record keeping practices related to work performance, progress of the project, etc.

Coordinate all media for the Lieutenant Governor for various state appearances. Worked under the supervision of the Chief of Staff and Executive Assistant to the Lieutenant Governor Lucy Baxley. Proxy for the Lieutenant Governor on the Pre Affordable College Tuition Program.

Managed the day-to-day operations of the Council President’s Office. Coordinated the Administration Committee and the Committee of the Whole for the Birmingham City Council. Strategically planned district-wide economic development, education, public safety and housing projects. Communicated with Councillors, constituents and citizens in person and via the phone. Attended meetings and other engagements with/for Council President. Handled discretionary projects. Informed the Council President of issues relating to the city and district.

Assisted in the development and implementation of Base Voter Activities in Philadelphia. Implemented Base Vote Canvassing Program in conjunction with local leadership and Kerry/Edwards Philadelphia Campaign Team. Assisted in making over 40,000 voter contacts in North and West Philadelphia. Worked under the direct supervision of Nicholas Flager, Philadelphia GOTV Director, and Don Jones, Philadelphia Base Vote Director.
