Profile bio

About Christopher Petit

Hello! My name is Christopher Petit, and I am a recent student of the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (M.S., degree conferred Dec. 2024). I am also a recent graduate from Loyola University Chicago, where I majored in Molecular Biology. I am now a PhD student at the Northwestern University Driskill Life Sciences Graduate Program, where I am pursuing my interests in virology and immunology through laboratory rotations. As an undergraduate, I worked as a Laboratory Technician in the Mierisch Lab at Loyola University Chicago. I studied a protein called Drosophila PhLP3, and worked toward characterizing its role in spermiogenesis in D. melanogaster (fruit flies) by employing immunohistochemistry/confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, molecular biology techniques, and genetic techniques (crosses, double-balancing, etc.). I co-authored a methods review including in Springer entitled “Tracking Follicle Cell Development” (doi: 10.1007/978-1-0716-2970-3_8) and am first author on a manuscript entitled “The evolutionarily conserved PhLP3 is essential for sperm development in Drosophila melanogaster“ (bioRxiv: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.06.24.600488v1). My time in the lab allowed me to develop skills in many laboratory techniques, as well as practice in employing data-driven project design. I had a great amount of independence in the lab that has grown my ability to observe results, inquire, and plan/execute a research strategy to push science forward. In graduate school I worked with different microbiology labs on projects such as Hepatitis C Virus mRNA vaccine design/testing, determining differences in SARS-CoV-2 variants’ entry efficiencies, and on the role of certain innate immune proteins during viral infection. My graduate studies allowed me to work with diverse teams of scientists and physicians which enhanced my collaboration skills. I learned to quickly adapt to new environments and make informed decisions at times with little to no direction. This allowed me to routinely produce and present high-quality work even under tight deadlines, and overall expanded my knowledge of biological sciences and the research process. Feel free to contact me either on LinkedIn or at christophermpetit@gmail.com. ORCiD: https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9857-7593
