Role listed
Senior Scientist
As a scientific lead for the synthetic biology team of a CRO, designed R&D and implementation programs for clients ranging from enterprising AI firms to academic laboratories to Fortune 500 companies. Managed production runs, ensuring the delivery of reliable results with rapid turnaround times and troubleshooting experiments as needed. Lead seven team members to meet milestones in the greater macromolecule space - protein engineering, therapeutics, antibodies/nanobodies, bioremediation, agriculture, and IVTT. Accelerated development of our automated laboratory platform, enabling high-throughput microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and assays. Interfaced externally with clients and suppliers, and internally with engineering, customer success, business development, and product teams.
Senior Scientist
In short order, became an expert in a field wildly different than my previous emphases. Established myself as a leader in our technology team by developing immunoassays, protocols, and best practices for our nascent high-content imaging platform, implementing analysis and quantification pipelines, and operationalizing additional high-throughput technologies to bolster our analytic repertoire. Interfaced with stem cell, neuroscience, molecular biology, and electrophysiology teams to validate new cellular and molecular tools, and to expand our quality control for materials put towards internal R&D and external sales. Fulfilled the majority of the company’s CRO work, becoming knowledgeable about outside research, adapting that research to our platform, and delivering actionable results in a timely manner.
Scientist
Staff Research Associate
As part of the QB3-Berkeley High-Throughput Screening Facility, I coordinated high-throughput and high-content screening operations. Our state of-the-art automated confocal microscope enabled 4-dimensional, multi-readout cellular assay and phenotype screening. RNAi arrays, in conjunction with compound screens, revealed the genetic basis for cellular response to small molecules and biologics. Our complete laboratory automation ensemble provided the necessary tools to set up screens in high-throughput. Advanced analytical methods, including cutting-edge molecular imaging software, were necessary to process the high-volume data sets that are generated.
Research Lead
What a fun project! In collaboration with digital content creator, Trina Espinoza, I developed and executed experimental methods to survey the microbiome of cosmetics after cosmetics pass their expiration date. Cosmetics are pricey and are rarely finished in their entirety before expiring, compelling many to continue using them. But what risks lurk underneath once preservatives begin to wane in anti-microbial effectiveness? To summarize, we were able to detect a spectrum of bacteria. Harmless commensals that are a part of a health skin microbiome. Fairly innocuous species that can be harmful depending on exposure route. A strain that can causes tissue damage, even blindness. Even a fecal indicator! We hope this project will offer insight as to the practical applications of microbiology (and science as a whole) to viewers of all ages and experiences. I am always keen to mentor young scientists and am so grateful to be part of Google's STEM outreach program!
Postdoctoral Researcher
I spearheaded an initiative to develop a biomaterial that promises to supersede nanotube technology. Ours is a streamlined, self-assembling protein nanotube capable of scaffolding user-specified molecular cargo for therapeutic, industrial, even textile purposes. Advantages of our BMC Nanotube include minimal synthesis production requirements, simplified (albeit novel) purification protocol, and opportunities for genetic and chemical modificationOther responsibilities included mentoring undergraduates in molecular and biochemical methods, preparing manuscripts for publication, presenting data, meeting deadlines, and collaborating in an interdisciplinary and multicultural work environment.
Phd Researcher
My work focused on the characterization of a protein virulence factor for a re-emerging bacterial pathogen. Research employed a variety of genetic tools for the development of mutant strains. Mutated proteins were evaluated for cellular trafficking, secretion, structure and infectivity using molecular, biochemical, and animal-modeling and techniques. The project particularly focused a systematic survey of protein domains, motifs and pro-regions to evaluate individual and combinatorial contributions to protein maturation and function.
