I am an active governor and member of the Finance and Staffing committee which forms a key part of the governing body of my child's primary school. Our role is strategic and is primarily concerned with overseeing governance of the school. Governors responsibilities are wide ranging and include the overview of the school curriculum, the appointment of staff, health and safety, the upkeep of the school building and monitoring of the school finances. The school is an Academy Trust and therefore as a governor I am also an appointed director of the company.

Working on a prestigious contract, I configured and managed systems linking the client's corporate networks to external partners at all classifications. Systems included firewalls, IDS/IPS and content filtering for both web and e-mail as well as e-mail routing and DNS on both physical and virtualised platforms. I also managed parts of the Extranet estates requiring administration skills in Windows (Server 2003 to 2012) and I was the team SME for Linux Administration.

Working for a FTSE 100 service provider on a high profile MOD contract, I was the local SME for all IT security related issues. I interpreted both MOD and wider HMG standards to specify and document IT security policy. I provided practical advice to project managers, engineers, the MOD authority and senior management on implementing IS security policy within a diverse and challenging business and academic environment. I authored all SyOPs and ensured they were issued and accepted by users, colleagues and contractors. I wrote and delivered information security briefings to civilians, MOD personnel and students; coordinated the response to all security incidents, whether identified locally, or remotely by the MOD, and acted as liaison between the MOD authority, the MOD accreditor, technical teams, IT service management and users. I maintained the IT risk register, coordinated risk management activity and chaired the IT Security Working Group. I carried out a DPA review of a large personnel database application and investigated the security requirements for a tablet PC/e-reader trial. I provided occasional second line technical support to a number of network systems including the SSL VPN and firewalls. I held national security vetting clearance.

I leveraged my strong technical background to assist with the specification of solutions and policy across the whole IT spectrum and communicate these to senior management and customers. Using the ITIL® Version 3 Framework I managed change from identification of customer requirements through to specification, pricing and purchase of suitable solutions. I utilised PRINCE2 to deliver on time, on budget and to agreed quality standards. Projects included the design of wired and wireless IT networks (to JSP480) for six new and refurbished buildings and development of an IT service charge model. I was involved in a number of LEAN continual improvement events and represented the IT department externally at senior management and customer level.

Line management to a small team of Network Support Officers, ensuring adequate network support cover for core and silent hours; ensuring training requirements were identified and met; provision of technical lead and direction on support issues. Chair of a Network Security working party charged with identification, management, escalation and resolution of network security threats.

Enterprise network management (c. 2000 workstations) including Firewalls and VPN (IPSEC and SSL). I was instrumental in the development of an innovative gateway solution to permit simultaneous access to MOD RLI and the Internet, which saved the MOD millions in rental and support costs. Management of E-Mail systems for 3000 users using EXIM and MailScanner. Web content filtering using Squid and DansGuardian. DNS (Windows and BIND). Web server management (Apache, ZOPE/Plone, Redhat Enterprise Linux)

Web page design and development using HTML, PERL, CGI, and databases. Web server systems administration (Redhat Linux running Apache)

Support of an extensive physical network including hub and switch configuration and cable troubleshooting. Management of a dial-up network solution for remote users. Development of college wide e-mail systems and migration from POP3/MS Mail to MS Exchange.
