Member, Florida'S Blood Clot And Pulmonary Embolism Policy Workgroup - Emily Adkins Prevention Act

Current
Florida Agency For Health Care Administration

https://www.stoptheclot.org/news/emily-adkins/May 3, 2023After their 23-year-old daughter Emily died of a blood clot following an ankle fracture, Janet and Doug Adkins channeled their grief into advocacy. The result is the Emily Adkins Prevention Act, a groundbreaking measure passed Wednesday, May 3 by the Florida Legislature. It greenlights the creation of a policy workgroup that will examine how blood clots and pulmonary emboli affect the lives of Floridians. Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose sister died of a blood clot in 2015, is expected to sign it into law. No other such measure exists in the U.S. At a press conference after the bill was passed, Leslie Lake, volunteer president of the National Blood Clot Alliance, said that Florida’s action will serve as a model for other states. “This is a momentous and huge step forward to protecting and saving so many lives,” she said. “With this bill as a base, we will now have the tools to stop this national health crisis.”The goals of the workgroup will be to consider recommendations around standards of care guidelines for blood clot patients and determine how many Florida residents are affected by blood clots. It would also identify how data is collected, identify emerging treatments and therapies, and develop a recommendation for risk surveillance systems. Rep. Dean Black, who sponsored the bill in the house, said this bipartisan measure will make a difference in Florida and beyond.“We will save thousands and thousands and thousands of lives and it will echo across the country and across the world,” Rep. Dean Black said. “No one is doing this, and it starts here.” The workgroup will issue its final report on Jan. 4, 2025 – Emily Adkins’ 25th birthday.

Just as surgery has evolved into more minimal invasion, so has the treatment of varicose veins. Foam sclerotherapy is quick, efficient, easy to use and inexpensive, and is widely believed to become the dominant form of therapy for varicose veins.” However, UGFS is not generally promoted despite being a low cost, highly effective treatment for CVI. Physicians and other stakeholders with interest and expertise in UGFS have emerged as a distinct group, yet there is no "home" for us, until now. There are no accepted standards for professional development or practice for medical or cosmetic sclerotherapy. TSI members have access to continuing professional development through in person, virtual, and hybrid meetings, as well as electronic communications, mentoring, and networking. The role of TSI is to establish consensus on best practices and inform and educate members, patients and the public, the media, and other stakeholders.

Chair, Committee On Health Care Information Technology

FMA HIT Committee guides FMA HIT strategy.Physician-driven health information exchange (HIE) development is a high priority for the citizens of Florida and the nation.Maintaining physicians as guardians of our patient’s private health information is of extreme importance to both physicians and patients and a vital part of the sacred physician-patient relationship. Many newly developing HIEs have little or no physician and patient input or involvement. The new age of HIE places our patients’ private, clinical information at risk of being stored, owned and controlled by non-physicians including corporations, hospital systems, insurance companies, and the government that may not be in our patient's best interest.HIE is comparable to the internet where medical records are securely transmitted among authorized physicians. In coming years, individual private health information will be available to physicians with a simple click of a button on the “medical records internet”. Electronic medical records (EMRs) are comparable to personal computers where physicians electronically gather and use patient records in their offices and clinics to provide optimal health care to our patients. EMR and HIE can improve our lives, just as personal computers and the internet have improved our lives. However, confidential health information available over the “medical records internet” raises legitimate security, privacy, and quality health care concerns.HIEs will become health data bureaus analogous to credit bureaus today. Physicians -- not corporations -- are best qualified to analyze data within health data bureaus that can then be used to improve health care quality guidelines that are in the best interest of our patients.Physicians have been trusted with patient's medical records for generations and HIEs and the medical records they contain should remain under the control of patients and physicians.

As this market develops, the creators of this data (i.e. providers, hospitals, etc.) will either position themselves to benefit from this new endeavor, or be left wondering how their data was used to propel someone else’s success.Auronexus was founded by a group of proven entrepreneurs and seasoned executives. The CEO, Gerald Beinhauer MD, has been a practicing physician for over eight years. He recognized a tremendous issue in the marketplace; providers talk about the need to “own their data,” because they recognize that it has value, but they have no avenue by which to extract this value. Meanwhile, other third parties have exploited providers by contractually seizing ownership and rights of use of the data. Auronexus was created as the providers’ partner in creating, safeguarding, and growing the value of their data.Operating in Tampa, Florida, Auronexus developed its business model and proprietary I.T. infrastructure to serve all providers who generate healthcare data. This includes Physicians, Physician Groups, Hospitals, Health Systems, and Accountable Care Organizations. With the development and completion of its HIPAA certified I.T. platform, Auronexus is empowered with a proprietary technology position that is designed to offload the burden for its partners to ensure that the value of their data is protected, while simplifying the process of interfacing and interconnectivity with other third parties.

Florida Accountable Care Services

The shift in health policy towards better health for people, better health for populations, and reducing over all costs has resulted in the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in 2010 and forever altered the landscape of healthcare delivery in the United States. Many individuals and organizations view the changes in healthcare as further impediments by the government and large players in how physicians treat their patients; how patients will receive care; and how people get insurance. Meanwhile others view the changes as opportunities for physicians to wrestle back control of the healthcare system; to increase patient's access to care; increase the quality of care received by patients; and help to reduce overall healthcare spending.Health Information Exchange (HIE) in Florida: State of the State. Presentation to CMS Innovation Center in support of Pioneer ACO application by Florida Accountable Care Services. Baltimore, Maryland. September 20, 2011. Subsequently awarded Medicare Shared Savings ACO in April 2012.
