Art Director • Surfer Magazine

San Juan Capistrano, California, United States

Because the design of Beach Culture Magazine made such a profound impact on the look and feel of surf and skate culture-at-large, the granddaddy SURFER magazine realized they had to update their format. David Carson contracted out the job to reformat all of the standards. As we rolled out the redesign, David and I divvied up the assignments to design the features in the well for several issues. For this assignment, we got to move out of the warehouse and sit at actual desks at SURFER. But no one ever spoke to me— literally— except Steve Hawk. Steve Hawk was our editor. I was so uncool that I had never heard of him or his world famous brother Tony. While I still used a 35 mm slide projector to trace photo contours for FPO, I did use PageMaker™ to set some of the text in context of a layout. It was an honor to work everyday with images made by legendary photographers Art Brewer and Chris Klopf. I was responsible for the first commercial introduction of the iconic typefaces Template Gothic and Industry Sans by securing their usage rights from Barry Deck prior to the subsequent release by Emigre Fonts. After the gig with SURFER MAGAZINE wrapped up, David reunited with founding editor Neil Feineman to launch Ray Gun. David called me up and asked me to collaborate to design the first issues of Ray Gun. But I'd had enough. On that first telephone call, I told David that the perfect designer for Ray Gun was my roommate and fellow CalArts classmate Lis Charman. Lis was between graduation and the start of an internship to work with Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Licko at Émigré Magazine. Lis is probably the most famous graphic design that has (almost) never been written about.

1991 - 1992 ~1 yr

Art Director • Beach Culture Magazine

San Juan Capistrano, California

I collaborated with editor Neil Feineman and art director David Carson. I designed 50% of the pages in the magazine. When David offered me the job, I had to call him from a public payphone (an actual glass booth) on a street corner in Venice Beach; I didn't have my own home yet, so I didn't have a PacBell landline. It was back when we pasted up artwork on paper boards. Since Beach Culture wasn't truly a standalone business (it was a special advertising supplement for SURFER Publications; there were only six issues), we all worked in an unheated corner of the distribution warehouse behind the SURFER offices in San Juan Capistrano. The rest, as they say, is history.
