I am the the Liberal Arts Professor of Political Science, Professor of Sociology and Criminology (by courtesy), and Affiliate Professor of Law and Information Science and Technology at Pennsylvania State University. I am also a long-time lecturer at the Global School for Empirical Research Methods (GSERM) at the University of St. Gallen, and a recently-added Expert at InStats. I received my Ph.D. in political science from Ohio State University in 1997. Prior to coming to Penn State, I was Professor of Political Science at the University of South Carolina (2005-2007), a Visiting Scientist and Program Director for the Law and Social Science Program at the National Science Foundation (2003-2005), and the Winship Distinguished Research Professor of Political Science at Emory University, where I taught from 1996 to 2003.Beginning in 2010, I co-founded LawyerMetrics LLC, a research and analytics firm that used data and analytics to optimize their personnel, management, and client services processes. Our clients included more than two dozen AmLaw 200 law firms, as well as law schools, bar associations, and other legal services organizations. LawyerMetrics was acquired by AccessLex in 2015.I teach and conduct research on legal and judicial systems, and on visualization, applied statistics, and machine learning for the social and behavioral sciences. I also assist members of the legal services industry with data analytics, visualization, and implementation.
