Founder & Group CeoOpen Cinema Jun 2009 - Mar 2020GbOpen Cinema enables any group to launch a community cinema, or build skills through a filmmaking programme. I founded the organisation in 2009, and it is now a group of companies comprising Open Cinema Foundation (OCF) and Open Cinema International Ltd (OCI).As founder, I oversee the development of strategy and finance, marketing and partnerships, operations and the generation and evolution of our creative programmes. I also support our research and reporting, and represent the company at regional, national and international events. Open Cinema has worked with over 100 organisational partners across Europe and the US to launch participatory community cinemas and filmmaking programmes. 47 film clubs in five countries are now screening films on a weekly or fortnightly basis using our tools, resources, policies and support. These include schools, homelessness centres, care homes, libraries, village halls and community centres. We work to a fully-developed theory of change, to enable any individual or community to move from exclusion to participation. We do this through a four-step process of engagement, inspiration, development and progression. Our work catalyses, for example, 90% of members to participate in a second activity at that centre. We publish research and reports on our impact annually. Many of these elements were developed with support from the Thomson Reuters Foundation's TrustLaw Connect programme, of which we were the tenth registered social enterprise. One of the firms we've worked with was given the 2015 TRF Lawyer of the Year award for their work with us, and of whom Open Cinema is now a portfolio pro bono client.Open Cinema has won many other awards and accolades for its work, and has helped advance the understanding of the positive impact of culture on and by excluded individuals and communities. -
