It would have been difficult to soak all that in through books and school alone without hands on training and wonderful people who truly took time to really teach me so very much. I was hired initially as rehab hospital transporter to assist patients to and from acute care hospital room to physical therapy department while waiting for new Hendricks Center for Rehab Hospital to be ready to open and take first patient. This is where I really began my love for direct patient care, therapy, and rehabilitation. I had the amazing opportunity to learn hands on with the many different aspects of patient care. I rotated through each department for several weeks to months at a time doing on the job training as a physical therapy tech, occupational therapy tech, speech therapy tech, work hardening work conditioning tech, therapeutic recreational tech, aquatics therapy tech, wound care tech & assisted patients with pet therapy (utilizing animals to assist patients to gain function often working on neurological deficits). I participated in reporting directly to physician directors of rehab in team conferences, learned a lot about adaptive equipment, supply ordering for entire rehab center, transitioning patients from acute care to inpatient rehab to transitional care to outpatient. I treated patients in each of the various settings under the direction of licensed therapist.
