Chris Woebken Studio is a design futures research practice residing on the traditional and unceded land of the Lenape also known as Brooklyn, New York. The studio examines the potential of design for discussing new imaginaries around complex social, technological, and ecological challenges. The studio develops special commissions with cultural organizations including numerous free public programs.Chris is currently teaching at Fordham University and Parsons School of Design. Previously he was a research associate at the MIT Media Lab, Original Minds Scholar at Dalton School and a Faculty Fellow at Parsons Urban Systems Lab. He has experience teaching in K-12 contexts up to college-level within public and private schools such as CUNY City Tech, Columbia GSAPP, NYU, RISD, SVA, P.S. 147 and UPenn. Orchestrated participatory engagements for ideation of alternative governmental, social and economic systems. Generated new insights by employing play-write and scenario techniques as co-creative design methods. Synthesized and interpreted the learnings and activated these fictional worlds into life-size experiential installations and real-world products, infrastructure elements and architectural environments. Central to these methods is the creation of hypothetical future props and their deployment in familiar contexts such as 99¢ stores, science museums, vending machines and city sidewalks. With this work, the studio is exploring new territories for democratized futures by rapidly imagining, prototyping, deploying and evaluating visions of possible futures on an extended time scale. -
