Lead a startup facility to expand Jabil’s capabilities in the Additive Manufacturing industry. Focused on developing custom materials, compounding them, converting them into filament and powders for 3D printing, and printing parts using the materials. Use risk based thinking and Lean 6-Sigma methods to manage equipment layout and installation, establish standard operating processes, and train staff. Brought on line 7 extrusion lines, 2 cryogenic milling lines, an analytical lab for R&D and production testing, over 15 filament printers, and 6 SLS Printers at the Chaska, MN site. Expanded site capabilities to include melt blown extrusion for mask filter materials. Completed the expansion in 3 months, from initial concept to having 3 production lines validated and released for production use. Managed the operations at 2 other additive printing facilities (San Jose, CA and Seattle, WA) for a year that required 25% travel, in addition to managing the operations in Chaska, MN. Then continued to provide management and operational guidance to the staff in San Jose and Seattle. Oversaw the day-to-day operations and continuing expansion projects at the Chaska, MN facility with Production, Procurement, Shipping/Receiving, Process Engineering, EHS, and Facilities reporting to me. Managed the site budget for inventory, MRO, and consumables. Managed a capital investment budget.

Managed a facility with 10 plastic compounding extruders and long-glass fiber pultrusion lines, producing 22,000,000 lbs. of finished goods per year with an average batch size of 40,000 lbs. Oversaw the day-to-day operations with Production, Shipping/Receiving, Maintenance, Human Resources, EHS, and Quality Assurance reporting to me. Investigated root causes, developed manufacturing plans and schedules, and implemented corrective actions for non-conforming material. Used lean 6-sigma methods to develop and implement continual improvement projects for both the facility and processes. Completed a 6 month project to decrease downtime, decrease scrap, increase quality yield, and increase line rates on the line glass fiber lines. The effort increased throughput by 20%. Hosted and coordinated customer visits, quality audits, and regulatory inspections.

Worked on commercializing new applications with customers and RTP sales. Formulated, developed, and tested new plastic compounds using over 60 different thermoplastic resins and 100+ modifiers. Responsible for developing and recommending custom formulated materials to customers for structural, conductive, wear, flame retardant, high gravity, and/or high temperature applications. Extensive customer experience through one-on-one meetings and scores of engineered plastics presentations. The position required 70% to 80% travel to customers and other RTP sites. Managed RTP’s UL files and approximately 20 new UL listing projects annually. Coordinated global UL follow up services (FUS) activities to manage site sampling plans, testing, and non-conformance resolutions. Reduced RTP’s annual UL expense by 50% through price negotiations with UL, scoping of new listing projects more efficiently, and properly defining the site sampling plans for FUS.

Added the quality assurance responsibilities of testing and approving production orders. Managed the testing, approval and certification of approximately 50 production batches a month. In 2007 I completed a one-year working assignment at RTP-France as a Product Development Engineer. Mentored the RTP-France product development engineers and assisted with product development for European customers. From Feb 2010 to Feb 2012, I was given the additional role of Manager of Global Quality Management Systems. Responsible for implementing ISO 9001 procedures and documentation at multiple RTP facilities (5 North America sites, 2 Europe Sites, and 2 Asia sites), conducting audits, and coordinating best practice implementation. This position required 50% travel. The ISO 9001 Management Representative for RTP-Winona and RTP-Indianapolis. Managed the set up of the ISO system and site certification at RTP-Virginia, RTP-Mexico, and RTP-Germany. Managed customer specification review, approval, and implementation. Managed the PPAP process and maintained the document packages (PSW form, FEMA, Control Plan, Process Flow Diagram, and other supporting documentation).

Assisted production to resolve processing problems and improve process stability. Conducted site Quality System audits as ISO 9001 Lead Auditor. ISO 9001 Management Representative for RTP-Indianapolis. Wrote quality and test procedures. Completed my Lean 6 Sigma Green Belt training. Used the methodology to improve the processes and product at RTP.

Hired to help shut down the site and relocate it to Cleveland, OH. Specified processing conditions. Developed twin screw extruder screw profiles. Designed and specified process equipment.

Designed gas sample conditioning/handling systems. Developed pH sensors and hardware. Conducted price quotes for customers. Resolved production problems.
