CurrentThe International Society for Ethical Psychology and Psychiatry (ISEPP) is a volunteer, non-profit organization of mental health professionals, physicians, educators, consumers of mental health treatment, and their families. We are not affiliated with any political or religious group. Our overall mission is to use the standards of scientific inquiry to address the ethics of psychology and psychiatry. We strive to educate the public about the true nature of “mental illness”, the invalidity of psychiatric diagnoses, the de-humanizing aspects of traditional treatment, and the alternative humane ways of helping people who struggle with very difficult life issues.Contrary to psychiatric and pharmaceutical industry propaganda, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, OCD, and the surplus of over 300 other diagnostic labels categorizing human thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are not literal illnesses like diabetes and cancer, which were discovered and have real biological pathology criteria. Decades of scientific research have failed to demonstrate any biological pathology that causes these “mental illness”. Therefore, they are not conditions requiring medical or drug interventions, but rather they are natural human reactions to extraordinary and painful life circumstances. This research has proven that using psychiatric drugs, electro-convulsive shocking, forced treatment, and other de-humanizing interventions lead to worse outcomes than psychosocial interventions. To help these people we advocate various forms of psychotherapy, support groups, self-help programs, and help with employment, relationships, education, housing, exercise, nutrition, and other issues of living. We also urge the ruling out of literal diseases that can mask as psychological disorders. Sometimes the biggest form of help comes from just knowing others agree they are not diseased, and that their humanity has been infringed upon. The only way to restore one’s humanity is through humanity.
