Profile bio

About Chuck Wurl

I’ve had a very circuitous route to my current role with AC Corporation. I grew up in Miami, Florida and graduated from Columbus High School. I attended Elon University in North Carolina, where I played rugby and majored in History. I attended graduate school at the University of Tennessee for History. In graduate school, I developed several skills like public speaking, adult learning theory, and learned the general functions of a large public university. As an academic advisor for Pre-Health and Pre-Law students, I learned the importance of a good plan. In the classroom, I focused on the study of US gender relations in the 20th century, with a focus on popular culture. One of the personal highlights of my time at UT was also the beginning of my coaching career in rugby. I was head coach of the rugby team at Bearden High School, and served as secretary to the Smoky Mountain Athletic Conference. After a return to North Carolina, I taught History and Study Skills at Rockingham Community College, while also coaching rugby at my alma mater, Elon University, before taking over the head coaching duties at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. As for my day job as a teacher, I realized that that no one was going to come running out of a burning building asking for an Historian, so I began to shift my focus skills to enter the corporate world. I earned a Graduate Certificate in Instructional Design from the University of Wisconsin, Stout and was hired by a small engineering firm that focused on power solutions for material handling equipment. Tasked with building an online university for the company from the ground up, I learned more about Learning Management Systems, SCORM, and some light coding, than I ever would have learned as an instructor.

Director Of People Development

Current

Greensboro, North Carolina, United States

Jul 2024 - Present

Director Of Strategic Accounts

Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Area

Finally an opportunity to put all of my past skills and research to work in one place! At Linkage, I help guide corporations and institutions make better decisions about their cultures. Specifically, advancing women leaders and increasing diversity, equity and inclusions efforts. The corporate culture of Linkage is terrific and everyone has a voice. I have never been part of a team quite like this one. We have diverse backgrounds, and all bring our unique superpowers to changing the face of leadership everyday!

Oct 2021 - Jul 2024

Regional Account Executive

Mid Atlantic Region

After leaving the material handling industry, I took an opportunity with Lavi Industries. A family run business based in California, Lavi designed, manufactured, and installed queuing systems using hardware and software solutions. Chances are, if you’ve ever stood in line at a theme park or airport, you’ve been queued by a Lavi solution. One of the most rewarding projects I worked on while at Lavi was for a large auto parts retailer. They wanted an impulse merchandising queue inside all of their US stores. They chose our solution for its unique ability to add certain accessories to it, and because it was made in the USA. When the pandemic broke out in early 2020, Lavi had the foresight to purchase a large amount of acrylic paneling for bio-guards to be used in TSA checkpoints, which was a fun project.

Nov 2018 - Oct 2021

Territory Sales Manager

Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina Area

My first role in sales. The transition from leading an online university to sales was not easy. Success in Learning and Development is measured by things like development time and employee time to proficiency, in sales, it’s measured by results. I had the territory of Eastern NC and VA, and developed business through two channels: end user customers and forklift dealers. Specifically, what my role entailed was: 1. Set up a power assessment at a warehouse or production facility, where we catalogued all of the powered fleet, from forklifts, to batteries, to chargers. 2. Install battery data recorders on the forklifts to measure power throughput in every department of the fleet. 3. Use that data to design a more efficient system for charging and operating the fleet. Very often, the solution saved our customers millions of dollars annually. Overall, this was a terrific experience as my first role in business development.

Dec 2016 - Oct 2018

Business Training Manager And Developer

Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina Area

After a brief exit from ABT (now Concentric) I returned at the behest of the founder and CEO to complete the online university, but now with a focus on sales training. I immersed myself into the engineering, service and sales departments and got to work. The training I developed had a profound effect on the company and its culture. Service and Operations processes were streamlined, and the time to proficiency of a newly hired technician decreased from 6 months to 2 months. Moreover, the technical and sales training combined allowed newly hired associates to become relative experts in lead-acid batteries and DC power systems. ABT University was a success, but that also caught the eye of private equity investors, and eventually the company was sold. When that happened, the founder and CEO invited me to join the sales team and move to the revenue side of the company.

Apr 2015 - Dec 2016

Instructional Designer/Training Specialist

Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina Area

My first full-time job in the corporate world. I was still finishing up my graduate certificate in Instructional Design from UW-Stout when I was hired as an Instructional Designer. Talk about imposter syndrome! Concentric (ABT Power Management at the time) was a material handling power supplier (think gigantic forklift batteries and chargers). We designed cost effective, and efficient methods that powered some of the largest forklift fleets in the Southeast. My role was to develop an online training program for each employee, affectionately called ABT University. I designed and developed all technical, onboarding, and sales training in conjunction with several Subject Matter Experts at the firm, using Adobe Captivate Software. We used an LMS (Kenexa, powered by IBM) to deliver and track the content online. I had the privilege of being invited to an IBM conference to share how we leveraged the platform to grow our company, which was exciting.

Aug 2013 - Jan 2015

Adjunct History Professor

Wentworth, Nc

My first chance at preparing and delivering all learning materials for a variety of survey courses, I was also part of the curriculum team tasked with maintaining accreditation for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. My best experience as a teacher! I had students who ranged in age from 15 (Early College High School) all the way to 70. They brought all of their perspectives to the classroom and it was a great experience. I even continued to teach a few classes online after I started my career in the corporate world.

May 2010 - May 2013

Advisor - Graduate Assistant (College Of Arts And Sciences)

Knoxville, Tennessee, United States

As I progressed from a Master’s student and started working toward my doctorate I joined the Arts and Sciences Academic Advising staff in the Summer of 2007. This was a new challenge from teaching as we guided students through their first course registrations and university orientation, through their first couple years at a large University. In a way, it’s a lot like onboarding new employees! While there, I was a Pre-Health, and Pre-Law advisor for students choosing those paths, and had to learn an exceptional amount of curriculum paths and pre-requisites. Also, I had my first introduction into Diversity, Equity and Inclusion on a professional level, as I participated in the UT LEAD program, which provided leadership pathways for first-generation college students, especially those from underrepresented populations.

May 2007 - Jan 2010

Teaching Assistant

Knoxville, Tn

I worked as a graduate teaching assistant for adjunct and tenured professors in the History department. This provided a small stipend, as well as a tuition waiver, which was reserved for high potential graduate students in the History Department. I provided support for lectures and led discussion sections for large survey courses. Typically responsible for 100 students per semester, I was responsible for leading discussion sections, the occasional lecture, and grading all assignments. It was during this time that I had to learn time-management as I was also attending a full load of graduate coarses which often required reaching 500-800 pages of material per week as well as writing 5-10 pages of edited content. I enjoyed the classroom experience both as a teacher and as a student.
