By 2006 I had been a successful business development executive for several high tech corporations. One day I had an epiphany in which I asked myself: "What do I enjoy the most about being alive?" "If I refuse to worry about money, what would I do with my life?" My answers to these questions and the courage to follow my heart put me on the path to several entrepreneurial adventures. I soon found myself in a Mexican jungle, facilitating a couples' retreat for which I had developed a unique curriculum. My wife Laraine and I conducted workshops and retreats in 14 states while I wrote training materials and marketing content. By 2017 I was lecturing at China's "Cradle of Diplomacy," China Foreign Affairs University, about leadership. As I looked into the eyes of China's future diplomats, I recognized the escalating need for leadership training. Future technological, social and environmental challenges and opportunities will not only test China's leaders, but the leaders of every nation, every organization and every family. I created a leadership curriculum based on a combination of John C. Maxwell's "Five Levels of Leadership," Patterson/Grenny/McMillan/Switzler's "Crucial Conversations," Dr. Lucia Capacchione's brain-science-based methods of accessing hidden creativity, wisdom and inner strength, Drs. Hal and Sidra Stone's "Embracing Our Selves," and my own theories and practices gained from decades in the corporate and mental health realms. So far, I've taught these powerful leadership principles and self-discovery tools at China Foreign Affairs University in the 2017-2018, 2018-2019, and 2019-2020 academic years. With my wife and son, I've released a new book, "Threads of Resilience: How to Have Joy in a Turbulent World." In addition, we've launched a new online platform to provide much needed mental health courses. The courses, entitled "Get a Grip! Mental Health Courses" focus on providing a key to unlock inner strength, emotional literacy, and tools to overcome inner obstacles. While the book dwells on resilience principles, the online course offers tools to bolster mental health in support of those principles.
