About Dr. Chuck Clanton

In my career, I have done user research and design of consumer, business, enterprise, game and virtual world user experiences. Over the years I have pioneered methods for iterative testing, design, and usability validation that integrates well with agile development, new interactive technologies, and the needs for rapid evolution at startups. I am experienced at developing interactions for new technology such as hand held touch screens (a long time ago), interactive video on the floor of malls, body language for emotional communication in an online 3D world, and a 3D body gesture language in front of a wall display. I am also experienced at researching user behavior and developing best design practices. In recent years, I have lead and managed groups of User Experience Designers, including both creative and career directions.I prefer long term, full time engagements at startups where I begin as a solo contributor then build and lead a UX group over time.

Listed skills include User Experience, User Interface Design, User Interface, User Experience Design, and 45 others.

At Aratar, I recently consulted on improving usability and revenue from hotel video systems for Sonifi (formerly LodgeNet). Head Of Ux / Product Ux Architect

Primary Data has a unique and powerful technology that allows data can to migrate freely across infrastructure silos to get the resources it needs. Hot files are moved to flash, cold files to cloud, all without changing their data paths. I was hired to overhaul the outdated GUI and UX workflows. That required acquiring internal resources for UI, UX, and visual design as well as surge resources so that current feature development needs and the fresh-from-scratch GUI could be developed simultaneously. Back end feature development and front end GUI replacement finally met to realize the current DataSphere product. Users can specify objectives in terms of performance, protection, and placement of their files, so we used tree maps to display the size, performance and compliance against objectives across millions of files and hundreds of volumes and shares. We developed Sanke and chord charts to display file mobility among those volumes, and programming-by-example to support the scripting of file mobility based on its metadata for beginning users of the system. We architected and built a Managed Object Explorer that enables the user to investigate and understand the performance, protection and alignment of related files, volumes, volume groups, and storage systems.

Vp User Experience

San Jose, Ca, Us

Applied user experience design processes and expertise to design of existing and new mobile products. Created user test subject "pods" of high school girls to do initial and longitudinal testing of a new "snapchat-like" communication product with high emotional engagement. Helped launch the creation of a new "second line" product for smart phones. Conducted user testing on many mobile products and upgrades.

Cloud, crowd-sourcing, and community offer wonderful opportunities for solving difficult problems in powerful ways. I am happy about applying these techniques from social networking and massively multiplayer virtual worlds to enterprise big data problems like how to support human exploration and and analysis of massive data (the needle in the haystack problem), anticipatory notification of potential problems (anomaly detection), and sharing of issues and solutions across a large number of customers facing similar problems.

Feb 2012 - May 2014

Director Of User Experience Design

Santa Clara, Ca, Us

I worked with the VP of Product and external design resources to create an intuitive and compelling visual design with intuitive work flows. I enjoyed raising the quality bar substantially for enterprise GUI's, while tackling the fascinating problem of visualizing the impact of virtualization for user's unfamiliar with the technology. Pure's technology greatly simplifies much of the user's work while adding a few new concepts. Finding intuitive and effective ways to to present those new concepts was very satisfying.

Mar 2010 - Feb 2012

Director Of User Experience Design

Redwood City, Ca, Us

My job here was to work with the CEO and the internal GUI development team to develop an intuitive and simple UI for an enterprise virtualization product. I was drawn to this problem because it reminded me earlier times when most consumer UI's were built by engineers and painfully difficult to use. Those days are long gone, except in enterprise software where most UI's remain painfully difficult to use. On top of that, virtualization simplifies many problems but introduces new and unfamiliar issues. We did iterative design with lots of user testing to insure that we solved both problems: usability and intutiveness.

2008 - 2009 ~1 yr

Designer-Producer

Human Nature Studios

I worked with Greg Johnson on the design of Kung Fu Panda World, an MMO for kids based on Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda property. I worked on early drafts of the overall game design, and First User Experience for kids and their parents.

May 2008 - Dec 2008

Director, User Experience Design

Us

I conducted extensive user experience research to determine the best design practices for brief casual games that would attract and sustain interaction and communicate brand effectively for STEPScape, a new interactive video platform on the floor at malls. A national study by Arbitron validated that the brand recall and retention was substantially better than in any prior form of advertising. I then designed and validated an intuitive 3D gesture language for WAVEScape, a new interactive wall platform ("Wii without the controller").

2004 - 2008 ~4 yrs

Director, User Experience

There.Com

I was one of two Principal Designers at the online virtual world There. We were responsible for Avatar-centric Communication, the core value for a virtual world, including intentional and autonomic body language and emotional expressions, a cinematic camera system for intensifying emotional experiences, chatprops like the stage and love bench for specific group experiences, and many other innovations to support emotional communication. The There virtual world was the platform for Virtual Laguna Beach and won an Emmy award for technological innovation in 2008.
